2D1N Self Drive
- Ha Giang → Yen Minh → Dong Van
- Quan Ba Heaven Gate viewpoint
- Tham Ma Pass photo stop
- Return via Ma Pi Leng (short version)
Solid machines, a mapped route, daily check-in calls, and breakdown rescue if anything goes sideways. We hand you the keys — you ride the passes.
Wave 110, Honda XR semi-auto, or manual Winner X — maintained weekly, not just rinsed off. You choose what fits your skill level.
You get our turn-by-turn route file before you ride, plus a paper backup. No second-guessing junctions, no random border roads.
We message you each morning. If the bike acts up, we send a mechanic from the nearest town. Free swap if it can't be fixed quickly.
You don't show up tired and start hunting beds. Rooms reserved at the spots we trust — clean, family-run, hot showers, dinner if you want it.
The Ha Giang area permit is included. Bike comes with valid insurance and registration. We check your licence type before you ride.
Self-drive packages are honest about what you're paying for. No padded inclusions you didn't ask for.
Most riders pick the 3-day Loop — it covers the headline passes without rushing. Tight on time? Take the 2-day. Want every village? Go 4-day.
~280 km · highlights only · 1 homestay night
~370 km · the classic Loop · 2 homestay nights
~430 km · slow Loop · 3 homestay nights
The classic Loop. Riding hours assume normal weather and your usual photo stops — add 30% in the wet season.

Bike pickup and route briefing at the LoopTrails office around 8:00 AM. We check your licence, run through the GPS file, and adjust the bike if anything feels off. On the road by 9:30.
Climb to Quan Ba Heaven Gate — first proper viewpoint over the Twin Mountains. Lunch in Quan Ba town (rice + local pork, around 80,000 VND).
Tham Ma Pass switchbacks — slow down, take pictures. Through Yen Minh forest to Sa Phin valley.
Arrive Dong Van around 5:00 PM. Homestay check-in, dinner with the family if you want it. Old quarter is walkable from most stays.

Optional sunrise ride to Lung Cu flag tower — northernmost point of Vietnam, China visible across the valley. Back through Dong Van for a coffee.
Ride Ma Pi Leng Pass — the headline section of the Loop. Stop at the canyon viewpoint above Nho Que river. Optional 1-hour boat trip on the river (~120,000 VND).
Drop south through Meo Vac, then off the main loop onto the smaller road toward Du Gia. Quieter, fewer tour groups, jungle feel.
Du Gia village homestay. Swim at the waterfall before dinner if it's still light. Communal dinner is the standard — rice wine optional.

Slow start, breakfast at the homestay, optional second dip in the waterfall. On the bike around 9:30.
Ride back via the Du Gia–Ha Giang valley road. Lunch in Yen Minh or roadside.
Drop the bike at our office around 2:00–3:00 PM. Quick gear check, refund of helmet deposit, pickup of any luggage you stored with us.
Most riders catch the night bus back to Hanoi (departures 8:30 / 9:00 PM, 6–7 hours). We can hold the booking for you.
The base price includes a Wave 110. Upgrade if you want more torque on the steep climbs or have manual experience.
| Bike / gear | Notes | Add-on |
|---|---|---|
| Honda Wave 110 (semi-auto) | Base bike. Light, easy, fine for most riders. No clutch. | Included |

| Honda Winner X 150cc | Full clutch. For experienced riders who want torque on the passes. | +350,000 VND/day |
| Honda XR150 / Dirt Bike | Off-road geometry, longer travel suspension. Manual transmission. | +500,000 VND/day |

We'd rather you book the right tour than refund you later.
If any of those sound like you, look at our Ha Giang Easy Rider Tour instead — same route, you sit on the back, a local rider drives.

"Bike was solid the whole loop, no issues. The GPS file saved us a wrong turn near Meo Vac. Got rained on hard day 2 — the team called to check we were OK before we even messaged."
"Took the Winner X because I ride manual at home. Loved having the torque on Ma Pi Leng. Briefing was practical, not scripted, and the Du Gia homestay was the highlight of our Vietnam trip."
"Honest crew. They told me I shouldn't take the manual since I'd only ridden scooters — gave me the Wave instead and zero pressure to upgrade. Felt looked-after the whole way."
Everything riders normally message us about before they book.
Officially, yes — Vietnam requires an IDP that covers motorcycles, paired with your home licence. In practice, enforcement on the Loop is light, but if you crash without a valid licence your travel insurance almost certainly won't pay out. We strongly recommend getting an IDP from your home country before you fly. We'll check what you have during the briefing.
For mechanical issues — flat tyre, chain, electrical — message us on WhatsApp and we'll dispatch a mechanic from the nearest town. Small fixes are free; larger swaps come from our backup bike network on the Loop.
For a crash, get yourself off the road, call us, and if injured call emergency services (113). We'll arrange recovery of the bike. Damage is covered up to the insurance limit; anything beyond is the rider's responsibility — exact terms are in the rental agreement you sign at pickup.
October and November are the cleanest months — dry, cool, post-rice-harvest gold colours. September and early December are also great. April–May is buckwheat flower season but warmer and humid. June–August is the wet season: dramatic but slippery, and the Loop is muddy in May–September — bring waterproof bags. January–February can be foggy with low visibility on the passes.
We run self-drive trips year-round; we'll just adjust the briefing for current conditions.
Honest answer: they require respect, not bravery. The road surface is good (mostly fresh tarmac, the government invested heavily 2018–2022). What catches riders out is the gradient, the switchbacks, sudden weather, gravel patches, and trucks taking blind corners. If you ride within your skill level, slow down for blind bends, and don't ride at night, you'll be fine. Most incidents we see are riders going too fast for the conditions or trying a manual bike for the first time on the Loop.
Yes — we run a separate motorbike rental service from our Ha Giang office. You get the bike, helmet, basic permit, and 24/7 support, but no homestay bookings, no GPS route, and no daily check-ins. Cheaper but you handle the planning. Message us on WhatsApp for daily / weekly rates.
Most riders book 1–2 months ahead. Bike availability is decent year-round, but specific upgrades (Winner X, dirt bike) are limited and go fast in peak season (September–November). If you're flexible on the bike model, we can usually fit you in within a week. For a fixed start date in peak season, book at least 3 weeks ahead to lock in your bike of choice.
Yes. The route briefing in Ha Giang is in English. WhatsApp support is in English 24/7. Most homestays speak basic English (food, beds, directions); a few rural ones don't, but we send your bookings ahead so they know who you are. If you need full English-speaking accompaniment, take the easy-rider option instead.
Easiest is the night bus — departs Hanoi (My Dinh or Giap Bat station) around 8:30–9:00 PM, arrives Ha Giang 4:30–6:00 AM. Limousine VIP buses cost around 400,000–450,000 VND. There's no train and no airport in Ha Giang. We can book the bus for you and have someone meet you at the Ha Giang stop. Day buses also exist (07:00, 10:30, 16:00) if you'd rather see the road.
Tell us your dates and bike preference — we'll confirm availability on WhatsApp within a few hours and send the secure payment link.
Most riders book 1–2 months ahead — bike availability is generally good, but specific upgrades (Winner X, dirt bike) tighten up in peak season (September–November). If you're flexible on dates and bike model, we can usually slot you in within a week.
