You’ve done the research on the Ha Giang Loop and now you’ve spotted the 5 day Ha Giang Cao Bang option. One extra day, a completely different second half of the route, Ban Gioc Waterfall on the China border, and a noticeably higher price tag. So the question every traveler arrives at is the same: is Cao Bang actually worth the extra time and money, or should you stick with the classic loop and leave feeling complete?
This guide exists to answer that question honestly. We run both routes every week from Loop Trails Hostel in Ha Giang city. We know what guests rave about on each route, what they wish they’d had time for, and what the genuine trade offs between the two options. By the end of this page you’ll have a clear answer for your own trip

The Ha Giang Loop is one of the most dramatic road journeys in Southeast Asia. Over four days the route travels north from Ha Giang city through the Dong Van Karst Plateau UNESCO Global Geopark, reaching the northernmost point of Vietnam before looping back through the deepest canyon in Asia. Here’s what a 4 day 3 night itinerary includes.
Day 1: Ha Giang to Yen Minh via Quan Ba
The first morning takes you through Bac Sum Pass and up to Heaven Gate, a lookout over the twin mountains of Quan Ba (the Fairy Bosom). From there the route descends into Tam Son town for lunch, then heads to Lung Khuy Cave: the most spectacular cave in the Quan Ba district, with chambers of stalactites and stalagmites that few travelers see because the 4 day itinerary is the only one that gives enough time to include it. The evening arrives in Yen Minh at a local homestay with dinner, traditional music and the famous happy water.
Day 2: Yen Minh through the Karst Plateau to Dong Van
Day 2 crosses the heart of the Dong Van Karst Plateau. Stops include Tham Ma Pass, Lao Sa village (traditional H’Mong stone houses right on the China border), Sung La valley and Vuong Palace, the former residence of the H’Mong king. Vuong Palace is a remarkable example of architecture blending Chinese and Vietnamese building traditions, constructed around 1900. The afternoon reaches Lung Cu Flag Tower, the northernmost point of Vietnam, and Lo Lo Chai village, home to the Lo Lo ethnic minority in one of the most visually striking village settings on the entire loop. Overnight in Dong Van.
Day 3: Dong Van through Ma Pi Leng to Du Gia
This is the day most guests describe as the peak of the loop. The morning ride crosses Ma Pi Leng Pass, one of the four greatest mountain passes in Vietnam, with views down into the Tu San Canyon, one of the deepest gorges in Asia. The skywalk on Ma Pi Leng lets you stand above the canyon walls with nothing but air below. A boat tour on the Nho Que River takes you through the emerald water at the base of those same cliffs. Lunch in Sung Trai is followed by M Pass and Lung Ho viewpoint before arriving at Du Gia village, a quiet ethnic minority settlement in a valley surrounded by rice terraces, for the final homestay night.
Day 4: Du Gia to Ha Giang city
The last morning opens at Du Gia waterfall for a swim before the return journey through Duong Thuong valley and Lung Tam linen village, where local Hmong women demonstrate traditional flax weaving. Lunch in Thai An, then a scenic forest road along the Mien River brings the loop full circle back to Ha Giang city by late afternoon.
In four days the loop delivers: two UNESCO listed landscapes, six mountain passes, the northernmost point of Vietnam, the deepest canyon in Asia, a river boat tour, a royal palace, two ethnic minority village visits, a cave, a waterfall swim and a weaving village. It is a complete journey.
Learn more: Ha Giang Loop 3 Days 2 Nights
The 5 day Ha Giang Cao Bang itinerary covers Days 1 and 2 of the loop (Ha Giang to Dong Van, including Ma Pi Leng and the Nho Que boat tour) and then pivots east into Cao Bang Province instead of looping back to Ha Giang. This second half of the route is entirely different landscape, different history and different ethnic groups.
Day 3: Meo Vac to Bao Lac to Ha Quang
After Ma Pi Leng the route continues east through a series of passes toward Bao Lac, a remote market town near the Cao Bang border. From Bao Lac the road climbs to Khau Coc Cha Pass, a 15 step zigzag above Xuan Truong Valley. A short hike to the top of the pass gives an overview of the entire valley and the farmland below, a perspective that feels entirely different from the stark karst of Ha Giang. Na Tenh Pass follows before the evening stop at Me Farmstay near Ha Quang, a working farm with views over terraced fields.
A visit to Pac Bo Cave and Spring rounds out the afternoon. This is where Ho Chi Minh lived and worked in exile after returning to Vietnam in 1941, translating Marxist texts at the edge of a small stream. For travelers with any interest in Vietnamese history it is one of the most affecting sites on the entire route.
Day 4: Ha Quang to Ban Gioc Waterfall
The route continues through Tra Linh and Trung Khanh District, where a detour up to Pi Pha viewpoint at Ngoc Con delivers a panorama over the limestone hills of eastern Cao Bang. A country road through Trung Khanh brings you to Ban Gioc Waterfall by early afternoon.
Ban Gioc is the largest waterfall in Southeast Asia and the fourth largest waterfall along a national border in the world. The main falls are shared between Vietnam and China, with the Vietnamese side open to visitors on bamboo rafts that take you close enough to feel the spray. An option to swim at Rock Village nearby adds a late afternoon break before the final overnight near the falls.
Day 5: Ban Gioc to Cao Bang City
The final morning visits Nguom Ngao Cave, one of the most extensive cave systems in Southeast Asia, with chambers stretching over 2 kilometers of sculpted limestone. From there the route passes through Quay Son River scenery, then into a cluster of artisan villages: Phuc Sen paper village (traditional Nung handmade paper), Phia Thap incense village (where entire families make incense sticks using methods passed down over centuries) and God’s Eye Mountain, a karst peak whose eroded summit opening frames a perfect circle of sky above. The tour ends in Cao Bang city, with an option to continue by night bus to Hanoi or onward.

Because the 5 day route pivots to Cao Bang after Day 2, it leaves out several highlights from the second half of the classic loop. These are the gaps worth knowing before you choose.
Lung Khuy Cave (Quan Ba)
This cave near Yen Minh is only on the 4 day loop itinerary. The 5 day route passes through Quan Ba more quickly and does not include the cave visit.
Du Gia Village and Waterfall
The peaceful Du Gia homestay experience and the morning waterfall swim are specific to the 4 day loop. The 5 day route goes east from Meo Vac rather than south through Du Gia.
Lung Tam Linen Village
The Hmong weaving village near Thai An is on the return leg of the 4 day loop. The 5 day route ends in Cao Bang so this segment is not included.
The Full Loop Feeling
The 4 day loop returns to Ha Giang city, giving a complete circular journey. The 5 day route ends in Cao Bang, which means your transport arrangements change. You depart from a different city, and this is worth factoring into onward travel plans.

Ha Giang and Cao Bang offer genuinely different visual worlds. Ha Giang is stark. The Dong Van Karst Plateau is bare limestone karst: mountains of dark gray rock with almost no vegetation, terraced fields carved into the slopes, and the river far below in a canyon that feels like the edge of the earth. The scale is extreme and the color palette is narrow. It demands your full attention.
Cao Bang is softer. The limestone hills are here too but with more forest, more water and more green. Xuan Truong Valley is pastoral where Ha Giang is dramatic. Ban Gioc Waterfall sits in a wide, lush river basin. Nguom Ngao Cave is decorated with formations on a scale that even guests who have toured caves before say they have not seen matched.
The two landscapes complement each other rather than compete. Travelers who see both consistently say that the contrast is what makes the combined route feel like a complete portrait of northern Vietnam, rather than one kind of scenery repeated for five days.

All prices below are per booking for the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon option (total vehicle cost shared by passengers) and per person for motorbike options. Prices include accommodation in dorm beds, all meals on tour days and guide or driver services. A private room upgrade is available at additional cost. Bus transfers between Hanoi and Ha Giang or Cao Bang are separate. Foreigners visiting the border area pay an additional 260,000 VND per person for the required border zone permit.

| 1 passenger | 21,990,000 VND | 32,990,000 VND |

| Easy Rider (guided) | 5,690,000 VND | 10,990,000 VND |
| Self Drive | 4,890,000 VND | 10,590,000 VND |
For the Jeep at 2 passengers the price difference between 4 days and 5 days is 13,500,000 VND. Divided by two people that is 6,750,000 VND per person for one additional day that includes Ban Gioc Waterfall, Nguom Ngao Cave, God’s Eye Mountain, the historic Pac Bo site and three artisan villages. By most measures that is good value for what is added. For the motorbike option, Easy Rider costs 5,300,000 VND more per person for the 5 day vs the 4 day. This larger proportional difference is something solo travelers on a tight budget weigh carefully.

You have 4 days or fewer. The 4 day loop is the original experience and it is complete on its own. Nothing is missing because nothing was promised. You will see the plateau, the passes, the canyon and the river. You will leave with a clear picture of northern Vietnam’s mountain landscape.
You want a circular journey. The loop begins and ends in Ha Giang city, which simplifies logistics if you have buses, flights or accommodation already booked at the start and finish.
You want the Du Gia experience. The Du Gia valley homestay and morning waterfall swim are genuinely special. If what appeals to you is the quiet village end to the journey (rice terraces, a cold waterfall, breakfast by the fields) the 4 day loop delivers that and the 5 day route does not.
You plan to visit Cao Bang separately. Some travelers do the Ha Giang Loop as one trip and return another time for Cao Bang. Both are valid itineraries on their own.

Ban Gioc Waterfall is on your list. Ban Gioc is one of the most visited natural sites in northern Vietnam for a reason. If you have seen photos and want to experience it in person, the combined route is the most efficient way to add it to a Ha Giang trip.
You have an extra day and flexibility on where you finish. The 5 day route ending in Cao Bang is straightforward if your next destination is Hanoi (night bus from Cao Bang is direct) or if you are continuing to Ha Long Bay or Cat Ba. It becomes more complicated if you need to return to Ha Giang.
You want more cultural depth. The Cao Bang half of the route adds the Nung artisan villages, the Pac Bo historic site and the Lo Lo and Nung ethnic communities. This is a different cultural layer from the H’Mong and Lo Lo focus of the Ha Giang Plateau.
You travel in a small group and split the Jeep cost. At 3 or 4 passengers, the Jeep price difference becomes 3,999,000 to 5,000,000 VND per person for an extra day, a cost that most groups find easy to justify when they see the itinerary.
You want the most complete portrait of the north. The combined route covers two distinct UNESCO level landscapes, the northernmost point of Vietnam, the largest waterfall in Southeast Asia and both Hmong and Nung traditional culture. If “as much of northern Vietnam as possible in one trip” is the goal, 5 days is the answer.

Yes, and some travelers prefer this approach. Loop Trails runs a standalone 3 day 2 night Cao Bang Loop starting and ending in Cao Bang, which covers Ban Gioc, Nguom Ngao Cave, God’s Eye Mountain and the artisan villages. This option suits travelers who are coming from Ha Long Bay or Cat Ba, looping through Cao Bang and then continuing to Ha Giang for the loop, or vice versa.
The standalone Cao Bang Loop costs 6,490,000 VND per person by Easy Rider or 5,990,000 VND per person for a self drive motorbike. By Jeep Army the pricing runs from 14,990,000 VND for 1 passenger up to 31,990,000 VND for 4 passengers.
Doing the two routes separately adds cost and requires more total travel time, but it gives you the full itinerary of each route, including the Du Gia village experience and Lung Khuy Cave that the combined 5 day skips.

The border permit is required for foreigners. Cao Bang Province borders China and a portion of the route passes through the designated border zone. Every foreign visitor pays 260,000 VND per person for this permit, which is arranged by Loop Trails before the tour departs.
The route ends in Cao Bang city, not Ha Giang. Night buses from Cao Bang to Hanoi depart regularly and take roughly 6 to 7 hours. The journey is comparable in comfort and time to the Hanoi to Ha Giang leg. Loop Trails can arrange bus bookings from Cao Bang as part of the tour package.
Accommodation on the Cao Bang section is in local guesthouses and farmstays rather than the homestays typical of the Ha Giang plateau. The farmstay at Me near Ha Quang is a highlight that guests consistently rate well. Overnight near Ban Gioc is in Rock Village guesthouses close to the falls.
The Pac Bo historic site near Ha Quang is one of the most significant sites in modern Vietnamese history. Even travelers who do not arrive with a strong interest in the Ho Chi Minh story find it memorable in context. The cave, the stream (Lenine Creek) and the simple camp where Ho lived and worked have been preserved as they were in 1941.

The 4 day Ha Giang Loop is a complete journey. You do not leave it feeling that something was missing. It covers the core of what makes this region extraordinary: the plateau, the canyon, the passes and the river. And it does so with enough time to appreciate each one.
The 5 day Ha Giang Cao Bang route is more. Not just longer but genuinely different in its second half: different geology, different culture, different history and one of the most impressive single natural features in all of Southeast Asia. Travelers with the time and flexibility consistently say the extra day is worth it.
The clearest deciding factor is not budget or duration. It is what you want to take home from northern Vietnam. If the answer is the raw mountain landscape of the karst plateau at its most intense, choose the 4 day loop. If the answer is the widest possible introduction to the north (mountains, canyons, waterfalls, caves, history and artisan traditions), choose 5 days and see both.

Yes. The route is available as a guided Easy Rider option where an experienced local driver handles all the riding. Self drive is also available for riders who hold a valid motorbike licence and an International Driving Permit (IDP 1968). For riders who are not confident on mountain roads, the Jeep Wrangler option removes the riding concern entirely and lets you focus on the scenery
Yes. Ma Pi Leng Pass, the Nho Que River boat tour and the Tu San Canyon views are all part of the 5 day itinerary. The route covers the full Ha Giang Loop highlight before turning east into Cao Bang
September through November is widely considered the best window. October in Ha Giang brings buckwheat flowers across the plateau and golden rice terraces near Du Gia. Cao Bang is at its greenest after the summer rains and Ban Gioc Waterfall is at peak volume. March and April are also excellent months, with flowers and mild temperatures
Cao Bang Province is within Vietnam and is covered by your standard Vietnamese visa or visa waiver. The additional 260,000 VND border zone permit required for the Cao Bang section is not a separate visa. It is a domestic registration fee for visiting areas within the designated border zone
Ha Giang to Cao Bang by road takes approximately 5 to 6 hours. There is no direct bus between the two cities. Travelers typically connect through Bao Lac or return to Hanoi first. The combined 5 day tour handles this transfer as part of the itinerary
Ban Gioc is larger than most travelers expect. The main cascade is split into three tiers and is wide enough that you can hear it before you see it. The setting is a green river basin with limestone hills on both sides and the border marker in the water, making it feel remote even when other visitors are present. Bamboo raft tours take you to the base of the main falls. Swimming is possible at Rock Village nearby, where the river widens into calm pools
Yes. Nguom Ngao is consistently cited by travelers as one of the top cave experiences in Vietnam. The decorated chambers extend over 2 kilometers with formations that rival Phong Nha in the south. Unlike some famous caves the visit is not crowded and the formations are still largely intact. It is one of the strongest arguments for choosing the 5 day route
Ba Be Lake in Bac Kan Province sits roughly between Hanoi and Ha Giang on the map. It is possible to visit Ba Be either before or after the Ha Giang Cao Bang route as a standalone extension. Loop Trails can help arrange the logistics. A typical Ba Be extension takes 1 to 2 days and is best treated as a separate booking rather than a modification to the tour itinerary
Both the Ha Giang Loop and the Cao Bang section involve mountain roads that are navigable in rain but require extra care. The Jeep tour handles poor weather best since you are inside the vehicle. Easy Rider tours continue in light rain with rain gear provided. Heavy or sustained rainfall may affect the boat tour on the Nho Que River but does not typically cancel the tour. The Ma Pi Leng viewpoints and Ban Gioc Waterfall are accessible in most conditions
Night buses from Cao Bang serve Hanoi (approximately 6 to 7 hours), Ha Long Bay and Cat Ba Island (with connection). Loop Trails arranges bus bookings from Cao Bang as part of the tour package. If you prefer to continue to Sapa or Ninh Binh, the usual routing is to return to Hanoi first
Yes. The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon is available for the Ha Giang Loop 4 day and for the Ha Giang Cao Bang 5 day tour. For the Cao Bang standalone loop a Jeep Army vehicle is used. All Jeep prices are per vehicle so groups of 3 or 4 people get the best value per person
God’s Eye Mountain (Nui Thung) is a karst peak near Cao Bang city whose summit has been eroded by rain and time into an almost perfectly circular opening. When viewed from the right angle the sky shows through the rock in a ring, creating the impression of an eye. It is one of the most unusual natural formations in northern Vietnam and is specific to the Cao Bang section of the combined route
