Ha Giang is not what most people picture when they hear the word “honeymoon.” There is no beach, no infinity pool, no candlelit dinner with ocean views. What there is instead: a road that winds for hundreds of kilometres through some of the most dramatic mountain scenery in Southeast Asia, villages that have not changed much in a century, a river so green it looks painted, and passes that give you the feeling of standing on top of the world.
For couples willing to trade the predictable for the extraordinary, a Ha Giang honeymoon delivers something most luxury resorts cannot: genuine remoteness, genuine beauty, and the kind of shared experience that bonds two people together in a way a sun lounger never quite manages.
This guide covers everything couples need to know, with a focus on private jeep tours. When it comes to two people celebrating a new chapter, a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon with just the two of you in the back makes a lot more sense than a group motorbike convoy.

The obvious objection is the road. Ha Giang is mountain territory, and the first thing most couples ask is whether they have to ride. The short answer is no. A private jeep tour covers the same legendary route from the comfort of a proper 4×4, with a driver and a local guide taking care of everything while you take in the view from the window or step out at every lookout you want.
Beyond the logistics, Ha Giang has a quality that few destinations at any price point can offer: it feels genuinely discovered. Standing at the rim of Tu San Canyon looking down at the Nho Que River 800 metres below, or watching the sunrise burn the mist off the karst peaks from a Dong Van homestay rooftop, you are not sharing that moment with a thousand other tourists. You are just there, with your partner, in a place that most of the world has not yet found.
The food is hearty and honest. The homestays are quiet and run by families who have hosted travellers for years. The roads are challenging in a way that makes arriving somewhere feel earned. None of that is a compromise. For the right couple, it is exactly the point.

Most Ha Giang Loop tours run on motorbikes, either self drive (you ride your own bike) or Easy Rider (a local guide rides and you sit on the back). Both are excellent ways to do the loop. But for a Ha Giang honeymoon, the calculus changes.
A private jeep gives you something a motorbike cannot: the ability to actually talk to each other while you move. On a motorbike, you are wearing helmets in the wind. Conversation happens at stops. In a Jeep Wrangler, you can point out a hawk, share a snack, read the map together, or just sit close while the mountains scroll past the windows.
For couples who do not ride motorbikes, a jeep is the obvious choice. But it is worth considering even if you do ride, simply because a honeymoon is one of those occasions where comfort, privacy, and being in the same vehicle actually matters.
The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon that Loop Trails runs is a capable off road vehicle. On the rougher sections around Ma Pi Leng and in Cao Bang province, it handles conditions that would slow a motorbike to a crawl. You stay dry if it rains. You stay warm if the mountain air turns cold at altitude. And you can pull over anywhere you want without looking for a safe place to park a bike.
Rain during a jeep tour is not a problem. Rain on a motorbike on a mountain pass is a different conversation entirely.

If budget is a priority and you are both comfortable on the back of a motorbike, the Easy Rider option is still a genuinely good experience. Your guide rides, you sit on the back, and the feeling of being on an open road with the wind in your face has its own kind of romance.
The cost difference between Easy Rider and a private jeep for two people is significant. For the 4 day 3 night Ha Giang Loop, Easy Rider runs at 5,690,000 VND per person (11,380,000 VND for two), while the private jeep for the same route is 27,490,000 VND for two people. That is a difference of about 16 million VND. Whether that difference is worth it depends entirely on what the trip means to you and how you want to spend it.
Our honest recommendation for a honeymoon: if budget allows, take the jeep. If budget is tight, Easy Rider is still a wonderful experience, just a different kind of romantic.

The 4 day 3 night Ha Giang Loop is the route we recommend most for honeymoon couples. It covers all the main highlights: Heaven Gate, the Dong Van Karst Plateau, Lung Cu Flag Tower, Ma Pi Leng Pass, Tu San Canyon, the Nho Que River boat tour, and Du Gia village. It moves at a pace that allows real stops, not just photo opportunities.
Here is how the four days typically unfold.
The day begins at Loop Trails Hostel in Ha Giang city with breakfast and a briefing on the road ahead. From there the jeep heads north through Bac Sum Pass, climbing steadily until you reach Heaven Gate (Cong Troi): a stone archway cut into the ridge at 1,500 metres above sea level, with the Dong Van Karst Plateau stretching out ahead of you.
The landscape on the Dong Van side of Heaven Gate is immediately different. Limestone karst formations rise in columns and ridges from terraced valleys below. Villages of H’Mong and Dao people sit on the slopes, their stone houses surrounded by corn and buckwheat fields.
The route passes through Quan Ba (the Twin Mountains area is particularly striking), then continues to Yen Minh for lunch, before heading east toward Dong Van through Tham Ma Pass. Stops on this section include Lao Xa village, where stone houses cluster close to the Chinese border, and Vuong Palace, the former residence of the H’Mong king.
You arrive in Dong Van in the late afternoon, check into a local homestay, and the evening is yours: dinner with the family, the old town’s narrow lanes, and the quiet that comes with being 300 kilometres from the nearest city.

Day two heads north to Lung Cu, the northernmost point of Vietnam, where the national flag flies on a tower above the surrounding mountains. The drive passes through a landscape that shifts between dramatic rock formations and surprisingly gentle green valleys.
After Lung Cu, the route drops down into Lo Lo Chai village, one of the most photogenic settlements on the entire loop. The Lo Lo people maintain traditional longhouses with distinctive architectural details, and the village sits in a shallow valley surrounded by terraced fields. Late afternoon light here is worth staying for.
You return to Dong Van for the second night. Homestays in Dong Van town are comfortable and well located, and the old quarter has a handful of small restaurants and a market street that comes alive after dark.

This is the day most couples describe as the most memorable. Ma Pi Leng Pass is one of the four great mountain passes of Vietnam, and the road across it is a feat of engineering and scenery in roughly equal measure. The jeep takes the narrow road slowly, which is exactly how you want to travel it: with time to look.
From the top of Ma Pi Leng, the view down into Tu San Canyon is one of the most dramatic perspectives in the country. The canyon walls drop over 700 metres to the Nho Que River below. The river colour is a specific shade of turquoise green that does not photograph accurately and has to be seen in person.
At the base of the canyon, a boat tour on the Nho Que River takes you into the gorge itself. The walls close in, the sound of the engine echoes off limestone, and the water is still and clear. For many couples on a Ha Giang honeymoon, this boat ride is the moment the trip becomes something they will talk about for years.
After the Nho Que, the route continues through Meo Vac town and M Pass (named for the M shape the road traces on the mountainside), with a stop at Lung Ho viewpoint. You arrive at Du Gia village in the late afternoon, check into a homestay surrounded by rice fields, and eat dinner in the family kitchen.
The last morning starts with breakfast overlooking the paddy fields, then a short walk to Du Gia waterfall for a swim. The water is cold and clear. It is a good way to mark the end of the journey.
From Du Gia the route passes through the Duong Thuong valley, stopping at Lung Tam linen village where local women weave traditional fabric using a process that has not changed in generations. The technique is worth watching even if weaving is not normally your thing.
Lunch is in Thai An before the final section back to Ha Giang city, passing through forest roads along the Mien River. You arrive at Loop Trails Hostel by the middle of the afternoon with enough time to rest, shower, and catch an evening bus onward if that is the plan.

All Loop Trails jeep tours run in a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, with a driver and a local guide included. The price covers accommodation (dorm standard, with room upgrade available at additional cost), all meals on tour days (breakfast, lunch, and dinner as marked), and entrance fees. It does not include the bus to or from Ha Giang or the border area permit.
The foreign traveller border permit for the Ha Giang restricted zone is 260,000 VND per person and applies to all travellers on the loop, including those on jeep tours.
| Tour | Duration | 1 person | 2 people | Per person (2 pax) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ha Giang Loop | 2D1N | 12,990,000 VND | 16,490,000 VND | 8,245,000 VND |
| Ha Giang Loop | 3D2N | 17,490,000 VND | 20,990,000 VND | 10,495,000 VND |
| Ha Giang Loop | 4D3N | 21,990,000 VND | 27,490,000 VND | 13,745,000 VND |
| Ha Giang + Cao Bang | 5D4N | 32,990,000 VND | 40,990,000 VND | 20,495,000 VND |
| Ha Giang + Cao Bang | 6D5N | 37,990,000 VND | 46,990,000 VND | 23,495,000 VND |
For honeymoon couples, the 4D3N Ha Giang Loop is the most popular choice. It covers the full route at a pace that allows real exploration without feeling rushed. The 5D4N and 6D5N tours that continue to Cao Bang add Ban Gioc Waterfall, Nguom Ngao Cave, and the Phia Thap incense village: excellent additions if you have the time.
If you want to upgrade from dorm to a private room at each stop, ask about room upgrade options when you book. Not every homestay on the route offers private rooms, but most do and the cost difference is usually modest.
If you are already leaning toward the jeep, browse our Ha Giang Loop jeep tour page to see the full itinerary details and reach out on WhatsApp to check dates. We keep every jeep tour private: just the two of you and your guide and driver.

When we say “private jeep tour,” we mean the vehicle is booked for you and you alone. There are no other guests sharing your jeep, no group schedule you are fitting into, and no stops driven by the interests of four other people. Your guide and driver are focused entirely on your trip.
In practice this means:
The guide assigned to your tour is a local, born and raised in Ha Giang province. Most speak conversational English. They know which family in a given village will invite you in for tea, which homestay cook makes the best thang co, and which road section has a viewpoint that most groups drive past without stopping.
That local knowledge is not something you find in a guidebook. It is the kind of thing that turns a Ha Giang honeymoon into a story rather than a tour.

Romance on the Ha Giang Loop is less about candlelight and more about scale: moments where the landscape is so large and so quiet that ordinary life feels very far away. These are the stops where those moments tend to happen most reliably.
Ma Pi Leng Pass and the Canyon View
The lookout at the top of Ma Pi Leng Pass has a railing and a small stone platform. Standing there with a clear sky, looking down at the turquoise river 800 metres below, is one of those rare travel moments where both people in a couple instinctively go quiet. There is nothing to say. You just look.
The Nho Que River Boat Tour
The boat tour into Tu San Canyon lasts about 30 to 45 minutes. You sit at the front of a narrow wooden boat as the canyon walls rise around you. The scale of the gorge from inside is completely different from the view above. It is peaceful in a way that is hard to describe: no noise except the water and the occasional bird.
Lo Lo Chai Village at Dusk
The village is beautiful at any time of day, but arriving around 4 or 5 in the afternoon, when the light is low and the fields are lit from the side, is something else. Families are finishing work, smoke comes from kitchen chimneys, and the village looks like an illustration from a book about a different century.
Du Gia Waterfall in the Morning
Swimming at the base of a waterfall at 8 in the morning, before the day has properly started, with rice fields on one side and forest on the other, is a reasonable definition of a good honeymoon morning. The water is cold enough to wake you up and clear enough that you can see your feet.
Sunset from a Dong Van Homestay Rooftop
Most homestays in Dong Van have a rooftop terrace or an upper floor window facing the mountains. Watching the light change on the limestone peaks in the hour before dark is one of the most underrated parts of the loop. Find two cups of local green tea and nowhere to be.
Learn more: Ha Giang Homestay Guide
The accommodation on a Ha Giang Loop tour is a mix of local homestays and small guesthouses. On a honeymoon, this is either the detail that worries couples most or the one they appreciate most once they are there.
The honest picture: homestays on the Ha Giang Loop are clean, comfortable, and run by families who take hospitality seriously. Private rooms are available at most stops and are worth requesting when you book. The rooms are simple: a bed, clean bedding, a bathroom, and sometimes a mountain view.
What you get that no hotel can replicate: meals cooked by the family in their kitchen, evening conversations that are part cultural exchange and part impromptu language lesson, and the feeling of being in someone’s home in a place very few visitors ever reach. On a honeymoon, that intimacy is worth a great deal more than a minibar and a room service menu.
Dong Van, Du Gia, and the towns along the Cao Bang leg of the route all have guesthouse options as well if you prefer a hotel style stay. When you book your tour, ask about what is available at each overnight stop and what the upgrade costs are.
Most couples who have done a Ha Giang honeymoon with us tell us afterwards that the homestays were one of the highlights, not one of the compromises. If you have questions about accommodation along the route, message us on WhatsApp and we will walk you through exactly what to expect at each stop.
Lean more: Ha Giang in October
Ha Giang has two windows that work especially well for couples.
September to November (recommended)
This is the autumn harvest season, and the rice terraces in the valley areas turn from green to gold before cutting. The light is cleaner than in summer, the air is cooler, and the roads are generally dry. October is peak season for a reason: it is genuinely outstanding.
Late September brings early golden fields. Mid October is usually the peak of colour in the terraced valleys around Du Gia and Quan Ba. November stays pleasant but gets cooler toward the end of the month.
March to April
Buckwheat flower season on the Dong Van Plateau runs roughly from mid October through mid November each year, but the spring planting season in March and April brings a different kind of beauty: vivid green fields, plum blossom at lower elevations, and significantly fewer tourists than autumn.
What to Avoid
June to August is the rainy season. Roads can be slippery and some mountain passes are subject to landslides after heavy rain. Not impossible for travel, but not the time to plan a honeymoon trip if you have a choice. January and February are cold at altitude: manageable with the right clothing, but not ideal for an outdoor trip where the scenery matters.
For most honeymoon couples, October is the answer. If October does not work, March is a strong alternative.
Learn more: Ha Giang Packing list
The list below covers the things couples on a jeep tour most often wish they had brought.
Clothing
Practical
For the Honeymoon Specifically
Leave the formal clothes at home. The loop is casual, and the locals will be more charmed by two people in hiking clothes sitting on their porch than by anyone dressed for dinner.

Here is the straightforward summary for couples deciding between the main tour options.
| Private Jeep | Easy Rider | Self Drive | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Riding required | No | No | Yes |
| Private vehicle | Yes | No, shared | Yes |
| Weather shelter | Yes | No | No |
| Cost for 2, 4D3N | 27,490,000 VND | 11,380,000 VND | 9,780,000 VND |
| Best for | Couples, privacy | Budget travelers | Licensed riders |
Choose Private Jeep if: you want a fully private experience, neither of you rides motorbikes, you want to travel together in the same vehicle, or this is a special occasion where comfort and privacy are worth the extra cost.
Choose Easy Rider if: budget is a real constraint, you are both comfortable on the back of a motorbike, and you do not mind being in a group setting during the day.
Choose Self Drive if: you both hold a valid motorbike licence and an International Driving Permit (IDP) from the 1968 Vienna Convention (the 1949 Geneva Convention IDP is not valid in Vietnam), and you want the full freedom of riding your own bikes. Riding without a valid licence can result in fines of 2,000,000 to 6,000,000 VND. Loop Trails does not accept riders without proper documentation on self drive tours.
For a honeymoon, the private jeep is the recommendation. The cost difference over three or four days is real, but divided between two people over what is likely the most memorable trip of the year, it is worth it.
If you are ready to book or just want to ask a few questions before committing, reach out via WhatsApp or browse the full Ha Giang Loop jeep tour page. We will let you know what is available on your dates and help you decide on the right duration. Most couples who contact us book within 48 hours because the process is genuinely simple.
Learn more: Cao Bang Loop 3 Days best kept secret
Booking a Ha Giang honeymoon with Loop Trails involves three steps.
Step 1: Choose your route and duration
The 4D3N Ha Giang Loop is the most popular choice for couples. If you have more time, the 5D4N or 6D5N Ha Giang Cao Bang tour adds Ban Gioc Waterfall and some of the most dramatic scenery in northern Vietnam.
Step 2: Sort your transport to Ha Giang
Ha Giang city is roughly 5 hours from Hanoi by night sleeper bus. Loop Trails can arrange your bus tickets from Hanoi, Ha Long, Ninh Binh, or Sapa in either direction. Bus options include VIP sleeper, cabin sleeper, limousine, and private car. Arriving by night bus means you get into Ha Giang in the early morning, check into the hostel, rest a few hours, and start the tour the same day.
If you are finishing in Cao Bang (on the 5D4N or 6D5N route), return bus connections run from Cao Bang city to Hanoi and other destinations.
Step 3: Contact us to confirm dates and availability
Jeep tours book fast in October. Contact Loop Trails via WhatsApp or the tour page to check availability on your dates, confirm room upgrade options at each homestay, and pay a deposit to hold your booking.
The border area permit (260,000 VND per person) is arranged by Loop Trails on your behalf. Bring your passport.
Learn more: Ha Giang Loop Hidden Gems
Yes, for couples who want something memorable rather than predictable. Ha Giang offers dramatic mountain scenery, authentic ethnic minority villages, and a kind of remoteness that is very hard to find in Southeast Asia. It is not a beach honeymoon, but it is one that couples consistently describe as transformative
No. A private jeep tour covers the same route without any riding required. You travel in a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon with a driver and local guide, and you can stop wherever you want. It is the most comfortable and private way to do the loop as a couple
For two people, the 4D3N Ha Giang Loop in a private jeep costs 27,490,000 VND. The 3D2N option is 20,990,000 VND for two. Prices include accommodation, meals, and entrance fees, but not the bus to Ha Giang or the 260,000 VND border permit per person
The 4D3N tour is the best balance of coverage and pace. It includes all the major highlights: Heaven Gate, Dong Van, Lung Cu, Ma Pi Leng Pass, the Nho Que River boat tour, and Du Gia. The 3D2N route is faster but skips some of the most memorable stops. If you have time, the 5D4N Ha Giang Cao Bang route is extraordinary
October is the peak season for good reason: the rice terraces are turning golden, the weather is dry and clear, and the light is excellent. September and November are also good. March and April offer plum blossom and fewer crowds. Avoid June to August (rainy season) and January to February (cold at altitude)
The Nho Que River boat tour in Tu San Canyon, the view from Ma Pi Leng Pass at any time of day, Lo Lo Chai village in the late afternoon, Du Gia waterfall in the morning, and any homestay rooftop at sunset. None of them require booking in advance. They are just part of the route
Most homestays along the Ha Giang Loop offer private rooms as an upgrade from the standard dorm beds. Private rooms are not always guaranteed, so it is worth asking about availability when you book. Loop Trails can advise on which stops have private rooms and what the upgrade cost is at each
The roads in Ha Giang province are mountain roads: narrow, sometimes steep, and not always in perfect condition. In a jeep with a professional local driver who knows the route, the journey is safe. Road conditions and regulations can change, so it is always worth checking for current updates before you travel
No. Your local guide speaks English and handles all communication with homestay owners, restaurants, and local contacts along the route. You will have genuine interactions with local families regardless of language, because hospitality on the Ha Giang Loop does not require a shared vocabulary
Yes. The 5D4N Ha Giang Cao Bang tour (40,990,000 VND for two people) continues from Meo Vac through Bao Lac to Ban Gioc Waterfall, Nguom Ngao Cave, and Cao Bang city. It is a significantly longer and more varied route and works well for couples with more time. The 6D5N version (46,990,000 VND for two) allows an even more relaxed pace
