The route from Ha Giang to Cao Bang by Jeep Wrangler Rubicon covers two of northern Vietnam’s most dramatic regions in a single connected journey. You get the full Ha Giang Loop through the Dong Van Karst Plateau Geopark, with its limestone karst mountains, ethnic minority villages, and passes that cut into sheer cliff faces, and then the Cao Bang section, with Ban Gioc Waterfall, Nguom Ngao Cave, and God’s Eye Mountain.
When people start planning this trip, the first real decision is duration: 5 days 4 nights or 6 days 5 nights. The difference is one day, roughly 5,000,000 to 9,000,000 VND depending on group size, and a noticeably different experience of the route. This article lays out exactly what each option covers, who each one suits, and how to make the call before you book.

If you have the time and the budget, the 6 day version is the better choice. One extra day on a route this long and this dense with highlights is not a luxury: it is the difference between covering the ground efficiently and actually absorbing it.
That said, the 5 day Ha Giang Cao Bang jeep tour is still a genuinely excellent trip. It hits all the major stops, crosses all the iconic passes, and finishes at Cao Bang city. If your schedule is fixed and you cannot add a day, the 5 day tour delivers everything that matters. Choose the 6 day option when you can, and the 5 day option when the calendar forces it.
Both tours run by Jeep Wrangler Rubicon for groups of one to four people. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included on all road days.

This is not a loop: it is a one way journey from Ha Giang city to Cao Bang city, passing through terrain that has no equivalent in Southeast Asia.
The route moves through three distinct zones.
Zone 1: The Ha Giang Loop section. The Dong Van Karst Plateau Geopark, a UNESCO recognised region of jagged limestone mountains, ancient H’Mong villages, and road cuts so steep they seem impossible. You cross Heaven Gate on the approach to Quan Ba, push through Tham Ma Pass, visit Vuong Palace (the former residence of the H’Mong king), and reach Lung Cu Flag Tower at the northernmost point of Vietnam. Ma Pi Leng Pass, one of the four greatest passes in Vietnam, sits between Dong Van and Meo Vac: a narrow road carved into cliff faces with the Nho Que River and Tu San Canyon far below.
Zone 2: The transition corridor. From Meo Vac through Bao Lac and into Cao Bang province, the route follows remote mountain roads through dramatic passes: Khau Coc Cha with its 15 bends, views across Xuan Truong valley, and the Pac Po historical site where Ho Chi Minh lived in a cave during the resistance period.
Zone 3: Cao Bang highlights. Ban Gioc Waterfall on the Chinese border, one of the largest waterfalls in Southeast Asia. Nguom Ngao Cave. God’s Eye Mountain. The traditional villages of Trung Khanh district.
Start: Ha Giang city. Finish: Cao Bang city. Direction: one way, west to east. This route cannot be done in reverse without separate transport arrangements.

Here is the full itinerary for the 5D4N tour as Loop Trails runs it:
Take the night sleeper bus from Hanoi to Ha Giang. The bus departs in the evening and arrives early the next morning. Loop Trails can arrange bus tickets from Hanoi, Sapa, Ninh Binh, Ha Long, Cat Ba, and other starting points. Check in and rest at Loop Trails Hostel before the tour briefing.
Breakfast at 08:00, then a tour briefing at Loop Trails Hostel. Departure at 09:00. The first day covers the southern approach to the Dong Van Geopark: Bac Sum Pass, Heaven Gate, Tam Son Town, and Yen Minh. From Yen Minh, the route enters the geopark: Tham Ma Pass, Lao Sa village (an H’Mong community close to the Chinese border), and Vuong Palace. Arrival at Lao Xa in the Dong Van area by late afternoon. Dinner at the homestay, followed by traditional music, local games, and happy water in the evening.
The most dramatic driving day on the route. After breakfast, the jeep heads north to Lung Cu Flag Tower, the northernmost point in Vietnam, with wide views across the plateau. Then south through Dong Van and onto Ma Pi Leng Pass: a road cut into sheer cliff faces above the Nho Que River gorge. A stop at the Ma Pi Leng Skywalk for trekking views, then a boat tour on the Nho Que River through Tu San Canyon, one of the deepest canyons in Asia. Overnight in Meo Vac.
The route leaves Ha Giang province and enters Cao Bang province. This is a long transition day through remote mountain corridors. Lunch in Bao Lac. The afternoon covers Khau Coc Cha Pass (a 15 bend descent with sweeping views of Xuan Truong valley), a stop at Xuan Truong valley itself, Na Tenh Pass, and the Pac Po historical site where Ho Chi Minh spent time during the resistance period. Overnight at Me Farmstay in Ha Quang district
Morning departure east through Tra Linh and Trung Khanh district. A stop at Pi Pha viewpoint in Ngoc Con for a wide panorama over the Cao Bang landscape, then a scenic country road through Trung Khanh to Ban Gioc. Arrival at Ban Gioc Waterfall in the mid afternoon: a waterfall on the Chinese border that ranks among the largest in Southeast Asia at its fullest during the wet season. Option to swim at the rock area nearby. Overnight at a guesthouse near the waterfall.
The final day covers the eastern section of Cao Bang province. Morning visit to Nguom Ngao Cave, one of the largest and most beautifully formed cave systems in the region. The route continues through Quang Uyen, stops at Phia Thap incense village (where Nung people have been making incense sticks by hand for generations), and visits the Phuc Sen paper factory village. Final stop: God’s Eye Mountain, a formation unique to Cao Bang where the peak appears to contain an eye shaped opening when viewed from the correct angle. Arrival in Cao Bang city in the late afternoon. Night bus back to Hanoi or onward to another destination.

The 6D5N Ha Giang Cao Bang jeep tour covers the same core route with one additional day built into the schedule. That extra day allows the tour to slow down at the points where the 5D4N moves quickly, and to include stops that would otherwise be cut for time.
On the 5 day version, the Ha Giang Loop section (Days 1 and 2) runs at a brisk pace. There is limited time for the Du Gia area, which on the standard 4 day Ha Giang Loop is a highlight in its own right: a valley with a waterfall, rice fields, and a quiet riverside atmosphere. Adding a day creates space for Du Gia, or for more relaxed time across the geopark.
For the specific day by day breakdown of the 6D5N itinerary, including which additional stops are included, check the Ha Giang Cao Bang 6 day jeep tour page on the Loop Trails website, or message the team on WhatsApp. The exact structure of the extra day may vary by season and group preferences.
What stays the same on both tours: all the signature stops. Ma Pi Leng Pass, Lung Cu, Vuong Palace, Ban Gioc Waterfall, Nguom Ngao Cave, and God’s Eye Mountain are on the itinerary for both the 5D4N and the 6D5N. The difference is pace, not coverage of the headline attractions.
Want the full 6D5N itinerary? See the Ha Giang Cao Bang 6 day jeep tour page or message Loop Trails directly on WhatsApp for current route details and available dates.

|---|---|
| 1 person | 32,990,000 VND |
| 2 people | 40,990,000 VND |
| 3 people | 46,990,000 VND |

| Group Size | Total Tour Price |

| 2 people | 46,990,000 VND |
| 3 people | 54,990,000 VND |
| 4 people | 63,990,000 VND |
Price difference between the 5D4N and 6D5N:
For a solo traveler, the 6D5N costs 5,000,000 VND more than the 5D4N. For a group of two, the difference is 6,000,000 VND total (3,000,000 VND per person). For three people: 8,000,000 VND total. For four people: 9,000,000 VND total.
Spread across one extra day that includes a guide, jeep and driver, all meals, and accommodation, the per person cost of the extra day is reasonable for what it delivers on a route of this scale.

The 5D4N is the right choice when:
You have a fixed departure date. If you are working with a set number of travel days and adding one more is not possible, the 5D4N fits all the major highlights into a tight but achievable schedule.
You have traveled in Vietnam or Southeast Asia before. Experienced travelers absorb a lot in a short time. You know how to read a landscape from a moving vehicle, you are comfortable with homestay accommodation, and you will not feel overwhelmed by the pace.
You are traveling solo and managing budget. The jeep tour is priced per vehicle, not per seat. A solo traveler pays for the full jeep regardless. Saving 5,000,000 VND by choosing the 5D4N is a meaningful difference for a solo booking.
The Ha Giang to Cao Bang route is one section of a longer Vietnam trip. If you are connecting this route to Sapa, Ha Long Bay, Ninh Binh, or Hanoi, and you have a fixed itinerary, the 5D4N leaves enough days for those destinations without squeezing the whole trip.
Ready to book the 5 day tour? See the Ha Giang Cao Bang 5D4N jeep tour page for dates and availability, or send a message on WhatsApp.

The 6D5N is the better choice when:
This is your first time in northern Vietnam. The Ha Giang Loop and Cao Bang are not places where rushing pays off. The passes, the villages, the canyon views: they deserve time to sit with. If this is the only time you are likely to visit this part of Vietnam, spending one extra day here costs far less than the flight from wherever you started.
You are traveling with family or a mixed group. Children, older travelers, or anyone prone to motion sickness on mountain roads benefits from a calmer pace. Fewer hours in the jeep per day means more energy at each stop.
You want to include Du Gia. Du Gia is one of the most peaceful corners of the Ha Giang area: a small valley with a waterfall, rice fields, and an almost complete absence of other tourists. The 5D4N typically skips Du Gia due to schedule constraints. The 6D5N can bring it in, depending on how the extra day is structured.
You are a photographer. Every viewpoint on this route deserves an hour, not a ten minute stop. Ma Pi Leng in morning light, the boat on Nho Que River at golden hour, Ban Gioc at full flow: these shots take time. The 6D5N gives you that time.
The budget difference is manageable. For a group of two, the 6D5N costs approximately 3,000,000 VND more per person compared to the 5D4N. For four people, the extra cost per person is under 2,500,000 VND. That is a small amount relative to the total investment in a trip to northern Vietnam.

The Ha Giang Cao Bang jeep tour starts in Ha Giang city and finishes in Cao Bang city. These are two separate cities roughly 280 km apart. Transport to and from the tour endpoints needs to be arranged separately from the tour itself, though Loop Trails can handle both.
Reaching Ha Giang:
Most travelers come from Hanoi. The night sleeper bus from Hanoi to Ha Giang takes approximately 5 to 6 hours (evening departure, early morning arrival). Loop Trails arranges bus tickets: options include VIP sleeper bus, cabin sleeper bus, limousine bus, and private car on request.
Connections to Ha Giang are also available from Sapa, Ha Long, Cat Ba, and Ninh Binh. If you are routing from Sapa to Ha Giang as part of a northern Vietnam circuit, Loop Trails can help arrange that leg as well.
Leaving from Cao Bang:
Night sleeper buses from Cao Bang to Hanoi run daily and take approximately 5 to 6 hours. From Cao Bang you can also connect to Bac Kan, Thai Nguyen, and other northern provinces, though Hanoi is the most common onward destination for international travelers. Loop Trails arranges Cao Bang departure tickets as an optional extra.

The simple version:
Choose the 5 day 4 night tour when you have six or fewer travel days available for the Ha Giang and Cao Bang section, you have experience traveling in Vietnam, or you are on a solo booking with a tighter budget.
Choose the 6 day 5 night tour when you have seven or more days, this is your first time in northern Vietnam, you are traveling with family or a group, or you want to finish this trip without wishing you had slowed down somewhere along the way.
For a group of two or more people, the price difference per person is relatively small. The main constraint for most travelers is time, not cost.
If you are genuinely unsure which option fits your schedule, contact Loop Trails with your travel dates and group size. The team can check availability for both options and help you plan the transport connections at each end.
Book your Ha Giang Cao Bang jeep tour. Browse all tour options on the Loop Trails tour page, or send a WhatsApp message to ask about current availability, upcoming dates, and what the route looks like in your travel season.

The 5D4N covers the route from Ha Giang to Cao Bang in five full driving days, hitting all major highlights including Ma Pi Leng Pass, Lung Cu, Vuong Palace, Ban Gioc Waterfall, Nguom Ngao Cave, and God’s Eye Mountain. The 6D5N adds one more day for a more relaxed pace and the possibility of additional stops, such as Du Gia. For first timers and families, the 6D5N is the more comfortable experience.
Both tours use a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, a four wheel drive vehicle suited to the mountain roads, gravel sections, and steep passes on the Ha Giang and Cao Bang route. The jeep seats four passengers with luggage comfortably.
Yes. Each booking is for the vehicle, not individual seats. You travel with your group only, not with strangers from other bookings. A solo traveler pays for the full vehicle, which is why the per person cost is higher when traveling alone compared to sharing with two or three others.
Yes. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included on all road days. The first morning starts with breakfast at Loop Trails Hostel. Meals along the route are at local restaurants and homestays: primarily Vietnamese and local ethnic cuisine from the H’Mong, Tay, Lo Lo, and Nung communities you pass through.
Foreign nationals entering certain border zones in Ha Giang and Cao Bang (including Lung Cu and the area near Ban Gioc Waterfall) are required to pay a permit fee of 260,000 VND per person. This fee is not included in the tour price. Your guide handles the paperwork at the relevant checkpoints.
Yes. Loop Trails offers the same combined Ha Giang to Cao Bang route as an easy rider tour (guided motorbike, with a driver carrying you as a passenger) and as a self drive tour (riding your own rented motorbike). Both motorbike options are available for the 5D4N and 6D5N durations. A valid motorbike licence and an IDP 1968 (International Driving Permit 1968) are required for self drive. See the Ha Giang Cao Bang motorbike tour page for pricing and details.
Included: jeep with driver and guide, all meals listed in the itinerary, dorm accommodation, boat tour on the Nho Que River, and listed entrance fees. Not included: bus to Ha Giang, bus from Cao Bang, the 260,000 VND border permit fee, room upgrades, and personal expenses. Bus tickets can be arranged through Loop Trails at an additional cost.
September through November is the most popular season: rice terraces are at their most photogenic, skies tend to clear after summer rain, and road conditions are at their best. March through May is also excellent: buckwheat flowers bloom in the geopark in late February and March, and temperatures are comfortable at altitude. December through February brings cold weather and occasional fog at high passes, but far fewer other travelers on the road. July and August are the wet season months: roads can be muddy and some sections may be slippery, though tours still run. Check current conditions with Loop Trails before committing during the wet months.
The tour starts in Ha Giang city, where you check in at Loop Trails Hostel. It finishes in Cao Bang city. The route runs one way: west to east. There is no return leg to Ha Giang built into the tour.
The Ha Giang Cao Bang jeep tour already includes the core Ha Giang Loop highlights. If you specifically want to include Du Gia waterfall and Lung Tam linen village (from the standard Ha Giang Loop) in addition to the full Cao Bang section, the 6D5N is the better fit. The extra day creates room for Du Gia without cutting any of the Cao Bang highlights. Check with Loop Trails for the current 6D5N itinerary to confirm which stops are scheduled on your travel dates.
