Most cost articles about Vietnam are guesses. Somebody rode a loop three years ago, remembered roughly what they spent, converted it badly, and now that number is on forty websites.
This one works differently. Where we can give you a real figure, we give you a real figure and tell you where it came from. Where the price is a local one that changes with the season, the operator and the year, we tell you what drives it and how to check it yourself, rather than making something up that you will budget against and then find is wrong at the gate.
The honest headline: the Cao Bang Loop is not an expensive trip. It is one of the cheaper mountain trips in Vietnam, mostly because the province has fewer visitors than Ha Giang and prices have not been pushed up in the same way. What varies enormously is how you do it.

Four things decide what a Cao Bang trip costs, in this order:
Everything else, tickets, food, fuel, is small by comparison. People obsess over the entrance ticket and then lose twice that on a badly chosen transport decision.
Two kinds of number appear below.
Ours. Tour prices are our own published rates, cross checked against our rate sheet, and current at the time of writing. If they change, the tour pages change first.
Everything else. Homestay rates, entrance tickets, meals, fuel and local rental rates are set by hundreds of separate businesses and by provincial authorities, and they move. Where we give a figure it is marked as a guide to check, not a promise. Prices at Ban Gioc in particular are set by the site and get reviewed periodically.
If you are budgeting seriously, treat the structure below as the useful part and confirm the individual numbers a week or two before you travel. That takes three messages: one to your accommodation, one to a rental shop, one to a bus operator.

Every Cao Bang budget breaks into the same seven lines. Getting the shape right matters more than getting any single figure exactly right.

That last line is the one people leave out. Set aside something for a puncture, an unplanned extra night when the weather turns, or a bus you have to rebook. If you do not spend it, you have a good dinner in Cao Bang City on the last evening.
Cao Bang has no airport and no train, so you are on a road either way.

The Ha Giang figure is one we book regularly, so we can stand behind it. Fares and departure times still drift, particularly around holidays, so confirm before you commit a day to it.
The overnight option is worth taking on the way in. You sleep on the bus, arrive early, and start riding the same morning, which means you lose no daylight and no accommodation night.

Local rental rates in Cao Bang are set shop by shop and there are far fewer shops than in Ha Giang, so availability affects price in high season. Rates drop per day on longer rentals: three or four days almost always costs less per day than one. Fuel is never included, and helmets usually are.
The thing to compare is not the day rate. It is the day rate plus fuel plus accommodation plus food plus tickets, against a tour rate that already contains all of it. People routinely compare a rental day rate against a tour price and conclude the tour is expensive, which is comparing one line against seven.

Cao Bang is cheap to sleep in, and the good options are not the expensive ones.

The stone village homestays at Khuoi Ky near Ban Gioc and the handful of places in Phong Nam valley are the best nights available in the province, and they are not the most expensive ones. Dinner is usually available and usually shared, which is the point.
Book ahead between September and November and around Vietnamese public holidays. Outside those windows you can often turn up.
On our tours the standard rate covers dormitory style accommodation. A private room is an upgrade and it is not included, so tell us when you book rather than on the day.

The smallest line that people worry about the most.
A meal at a local restaurant costs [confirm typical price] and a meal at a place with an English menu and a view costs several times that. In the district towns and villages there is very little difference between what you eat and what your hosts eat, which is a good sign.
Worth spending on: the rolled rice sheets in bone broth in Cao Bang City, the regional sour noodle dish, roast duck if you see one hanging, and Trung Khanh chestnuts in autumn.
If you are on a tour, meals on the itinerary are included. Drinks beyond what is provided at dinner are not, anywhere, ever.
Individually small, collectively worth planning for, and the numbers here are set by the sites and reviewed periodically.

Bring cash in small notes for all of these. Card payment is not a realistic expectation at any of them.
Check the current rate at the gate on the day rather than budgeting from a figure in an article, including this one. That is not a hedge, it is the same advice we give guests standing next to us.
Petrol currently runs at roughly [confirm current price] per litre, and it is set nationally so it does not vary much across the province.
Three days of riding the Cao Bang loop on a small bike is not a large fuel bill by any standard. Budget for it, do not agonise over it, and top up whenever you are near half a tank rather than waiting for the light, because stations thin out in the valleys.

This is where budgets actually go wrong.
The rental deposit. Usually [confirm typical amount] in cash, returned when you bring the bike back. It is not a cost, but it needs to exist in your wallet on day one. Avoid leaving your passport instead, since you need it in a border province.
Private room upgrades. If you cannot sleep in a dorm, price the trip with private rooms from the start rather than discovering it as an extra.
The bus tickets at each end. Not included in any tour price here, ours included. Add them.
One way drop off fees if you rent in one place and leave the bike in another. Agree it in writing beforehand, when it is possible at all.
Insurance add ons. Many travel policies exclude motorbike accidents unless you were correctly licensed, and some exclude riding entirely without an upgrade. That upgrade is a real line in the budget and it is the cheapest thing on this page relative to what it protects.
Fines for the wrong paperwork. Riding without the correct licence and International Driving Permit can result in a fine, and the range usually quoted is 2,000,000 to 6,000,000 VND. Rules and enforcement change, so verify the current position. Budgeting for this is not the answer. Getting the right paperwork before you leave home is.
ATM withdrawal fees, which add up fast if you take out small amounts repeatedly. Take fewer, larger withdrawals in the city.
A contingency of a day. Weather in this province can cost you a day, and the cost of that day is accommodation plus a rebooked bus.

The gap between budget and middle is smaller than people expect. The gap between middle and comfortable is mostly the vehicle, and the vehicle gap closes fast as group size rises, because a jeep is priced per vehicle rather than per seat.

Jeep pricing covers the whole vehicle rather than a seat. The rates above show two guests. One, three and four guest rates differ, and the more of you there are, the better it works out per person.

The honest comparison, including the part that does not favour us.
At the budget end, doing it yourself is cheaper. A cheap rental, dorm beds, eating at roadside places and organising your own route will cost less than any guided option. That is simply true and anyone telling you otherwise is selling.
In the middle, it is close. Once you are renting a decent bike, sleeping in private rooms, eating reasonably and paying your own entrance fees, the totals converge. At that point you are choosing on what you get rather than on price.
What the tour price is actually buying is the things that do not appear as line items: a bike that has been checked, somebody who speaks the language when there is a problem, homestays that were booked before the October rush, a guide who knows which unmarked lane leads to the good swimming spot, and not spending your evenings planning tomorrow.
Where a tour is clearly worse value is if you are an experienced rider who enjoys the planning, who speaks some Vietnamese, or who wants to move at their own unpredictable pace. Those people should rent a bike and go, and we will happily tell them so on WhatsApp.
Where a tour is clearly better value is groups of three or four in a jeep, travellers who do not ride, anyone travelling in the wet season, and anyone whose time is worth more than the difference.
Well spent: a better bike, insurance that actually covers riding, one night in a homestay you chose properly rather than the cheapest bed available, and the bamboo raft at Ban Gioc.
Waste of money: the cheapest rental in town, an English menu restaurant when there is a local place forty metres away, and anything bought at a viewpoint car park.
Worth paying for that people skip: a guide for a single day if you are doing the rest independently. One day with somebody who can translate turns the craft villages from a photo stop into a conversation.

Three messages, ten minutes, and your budget is real rather than borrowed from an article.
For the bus, book through your accommodation or a ticket office rather than budgeting from a website that may not have been updated.
Northern Vietnam has a clear high season from September to November, and Cao Bang follows it.
In those months, accommodation fills first and prices firm up, rental availability tightens, and the good homestays near Ban Gioc and in Phong Nam sell out on weekends. Book early rather than expecting to negotiate.
Between December and February, and again in the wet months of summer, there is more availability and more room to move on price. The trip is still good in both windows, it is just colder or wetter.
Vietnamese public holidays fill everything regardless of season. If your dates fall on one, book well ahead and expect no flexibility on price.

Self drive is the cheapest guided option and the best one if you already ride. You need your passport, a valid motorbike licence from home and an International Driving Permit issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention. The 1949 style permit is not recognised in Vietnam. Easy rider costs a little more and removes the responsibility. You ride pillion behind an experienced local rider and spend the day looking at the province rather than the road surface. No licence required. It is the most popular thing we run.
A jeep looks expensive next to a per person figure and stops looking expensive the moment you divide it by four. It is the right answer for families, couples travelling with someone who does not ride, anyone with children or older parents, and anyone travelling in the wet season.
Book once your dates are set. Most guests book one to three months ahead, and jeep availability is tighter than motorbikes.

Comparing a rental day rate to a tour price. One is a single line and the other is seven. Add everything up before deciding either way.
Choosing the cheapest bike. It is cheap because something was cut, and the something is usually tyres.
Budgeting from an article with specific figures for local prices. Including any figure in this one that is not ours. Check on the day.
Leaving the passport as a rental deposit. You need it in a border province, and getting it back becomes a problem exactly when you least want one.
Not sorting insurance. The cheapest line on this page protects against the most expensive one.
Arriving in October without a booking. High season fills the good homestays first.
Skipping the paperwork. A fine costs more than the entire difference between a budget trip and a comfortable one, and it is completely avoidable.
