Northern Vietnam is closer to you than most of the places you already fly to for a long weekend. From Hong Kong it is roughly a two hour flight. From Taipei a little over three. From Seoul it is under five, which is less than flying to the far side of your own region.

What you land in is a limestone plateau in the far north of Vietnam, with roads cut into cliff faces above a river gorge and villages that have been there a very long time. It looks nothing like Sapa, nothing like Guilin and nothing like the mountain destinations most people from these three cities have already done.

This guide is written specifically for travellers from Seoul, Taipei and Hong Kong, because your three situations are genuinely different from each other on the two things that matter administratively: whether you need a visa and whether you can legally ride.

Why this trip works from East Asia

ha giang loop with looptrails in chin khoanh pass

It is close. Direct flights run from all three cities to Hanoi and none of them is long.

Almost no time difference. Vietnam is one hour behind Taipei and Hong Kong and two hours behind Seoul. There is no jet lag and no wasted first day.

It is not a place your friends have all been. Sapa is on every East Asian itinerary. Ha Giang is not, and the difference between them is considerable.

It is inexpensive on the ground. Northern Vietnam is one of the cheaper mountain destinations in Asia once you have landed, and Ha Giang more so than anywhere on the coast.

It uses a long weekend properly. Most short haul options from these cities are cities, beaches or theme parks. This is none of those.

Getting there

Flights. Direct services run from Hong Kong, Taipei and Seoul to Hanoi. Roughly two hours from Hong Kong, a little over three from Taipei, and under five from Seoul, though schedules and durations vary by carrier and season. Compare properly rather than defaulting to your usual airline.

Fly into Hanoi, not Ho Chi Minh City. The loop is in the far north and the two cities are a long way apart.

Hanoi to Ha Giang. Overnight sleeper buses and limousine vans run from Hanoi to Ha Giang City. Take the overnight option: you sleep on the bus, arrive early and start riding the same morning without losing daylight or paying for a hotel night.

Coming back. The same in reverse. A night bus from Ha Giang puts you in Hanoi in the morning, which suits a midday or afternoon flight home.

Luggage. Bring a cabin sized bag if you can. Most accommodation in Ha Giang City will store whatever you do not need on the loop.

One thing to check. Vietnam introduced a pre arrival information submission, the E Pass, at Ho Chi Minh City’s airport in 2026, and it has been expected to expand to other airports. Check whether it applies at Hanoi’s Noi Bai by the time you travel, since it is free and takes minutes but is easier done before you land.

Visas: three cities, three answers

ha giang loop for a couple in ma pi leng pass (2)

This catches people out, because travellers from all three cities often assume that being in Asia means being waved through.

Seoul. South Korean passport holders can enter Vietnam without a visa for up to 45 days. Nothing to apply for.

Taipei. Taiwanese passport holders are not on Vietnam’s visa exemption list and need a visa. The e visa is the straightforward route.

Hong Kong. HKSAR passport holders are also not on the exemption list and need a visa. Same answer: e visa.

The e visa, for those who need it, is applied for online before you travel, is issued for stays of up to 90 days and allows multiple entries. Processing takes a few working days.

Practical notes for Taipei and Hong Kong travellers:

  • Apply on the official Vietnamese government portal. Plenty of agency sites charge more for the same thing and some are not agencies at all.
  • Apply well ahead, not the night before. Processing is usually quick but not instant and errors need correcting.
  • Check your passport validity and blank pages before starting.
  • Print it. Airlines and immigration sometimes want paper.
  • Fees and rules change, so confirm the current position rather than trusting a figure in an article.

Everyone in all three cities should confirm immigration rules close to their travel dates, because these have moved several times in recent years.

Not sure your dates work? The bus timing at each end is what makes or breaks a short trip from this region, and it is the thing most people plan last. Have a look at the Ha Giang Loop tours, then send us your flight times and we will tell you honestly whether a two, three or four day version fits.

Can you ride? The licence question

ha giang loop for a female group with looptrails (7)

Read this before you plan a self drive trip, because it is the single most likely thing to go wrong.

Vietnam recognises International Driving Permits issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic. Vietnam acceded to that convention in 2015. Permits issued under the older 1949 Geneva Convention are not recognised, which is why travellers from the United States, Canada and Australia generally cannot ride here legally.

Hong Kong issues permits under the 1949 Geneva Convention. On that basis a Hong Kong IDP is not recognised in Vietnam.

Taiwan is not a contracting party to either convention, so a Taiwanese IDP has no standing here either.

South Korea is genuinely unclear, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. Some sources list South Korea as a 1968 Vienna Convention country, which would mean a Korean IDP works. Official convention listings place South Korea alongside Japan, Australia, Canada and the United States, which is the 1949 group. The likely explanation is the difference between signing a treaty and ratifying it, since only ratification makes a country a contracting party.

What to do about it:

  • If you are Korean and want to ride yourself, check with your own licensing authority which convention your IDP is issued under, and confirm with the operator before you book. Do not assume either way.
  • If you are from Taipei or Hong Kong, plan for easy rider or jeep. Neither requires any licence and both cover the entire route.
  • Riding without correct documents can result in a fine. The figure commonly quoted starts around 2,000,000 VND and the range usually cited runs to 6,000,000. Rules and enforcement change, so verify rather than relying on an article.
  • Insurance follows the licence. A great many travel policies exclude motorbike accidents unless you held a valid licence for that class in the country you were riding in. Read the exclusions in your actual policy wording, and check specifically whether you are covered as a pillion passenger, because that is what most travellers from these cities will be doing.

This is not the answer anyone wants, and it is better delivered now than at a rental counter in Ha Giang City. The paperwork guide covers the general position in more detail.

How many days you need

ha giang loop with looptrails in tham ma pass

The arithmetic, since short trips are the point from these cities.

Loop lengthTotal time awayShape
2 day loopThree to four daysFly out Thursday evening, ride Saturday and Sunday, fly back Monday
3 day loopFour to five daysThe standard, and what most people should take
4 day loopFive to six daysAdds Du Gia, the waterfall swim and a far better pace
Ha Giang and Cao Bang, 5 daysSeven to eight daysTwo provinces, no backtracking

For a first trip from these cities: the three day loop with a public holiday attached, which usually means four or five days away in total.

The two day version works and it is genuinely rushed, skipping the southern half of the loop. If you can find one more day, take it.

Trip templates

ha giang loop for a group with looptrails Best Road Trips in Vietnam by Car and Jeep

The long weekend. Thursday evening flight, straight onto the night bus. Friday and Saturday riding. Saturday night bus back. Sunday in Hanoi, afternoon flight home. From Hong Kong this is very comfortable, from Seoul it is tight.

The standard. Wednesday or Thursday night flight, night bus, three day loop, night bus back, a day in Hanoi for food and the old quarter, fly home.

The proper one. Fly in, night bus, four day loop including Du Gia, night bus back, a day in Hanoi. About a week including travel, and the four day loop is a noticeably better trip than the three day.

Leave a buffer. Mountain weather and bus schedules both move. A plan with no slack between the last bus and the flight home is a plan with a bad ending waiting to happen

The best windows for all three cities are the autumn holidays, which is convenient in one sense and a problem in another, covered below.

Movable holidays shift every year, so check your own dates against the season notes and ask us if you are not sure what you will be riding into.

The Lunar New Year problem

kids in tham ma pass in holidays

This matters more for readers of this page than for any other market we write for, because all three cities take an extended break for it.

Vietnamese Tet falls at the same time. During Tet, transport across Vietnam is packed and expensive, many businesses close and mountain homestays are often shut or hosting family rather than guests. Some operators do not run tours at all that week.

It is a wonderful time to be inside a Vietnamese home and a difficult time to be a tourist trying to move around a country.

If Lunar New Year is your only window, ask about your specific dates before you book anything. The weeks either side are usually fine. The week itself is not, and we would rather tell you that than take the booking.

The early October trap

Worth naming because all three cities point at the same fortnight.

Chuseok, Mid Autumn, Korea’s National Foundation Day and Hangul Day, Hong Kong’s National Day and Taiwan’s Double Ten all fall in late September and early October. That is genuinely the best time of year in Ha Giang: rice turning gold, buckwheat flowers coming out across the plateau, dry roads and clear air.

It is also peak season in northern Vietnam, and it overlaps the Chinese Golden Week holiday in the first week of October, which fills accommodation across the country.

So the good conditions everyone wants are the conditions everyone is booking for.

What to do:

  • Book very early if your dates are fixed to those holidays, two or three months ahead rather than a few weeks
  • Or shift to late October and November, which are almost as good, considerably quieter and easier to book
  • Avoid the first week of October specifically if you have any flexibility at all

Vietnam also has its own public holidays on 30 April and 1 May, which produces another domestic travel surge, and on 2 September.

Weather and what to pack

ha giang loop with looptrails in can ty pass

Ha Giang is a high plateau and it is colder than any of your three cities in winter.

RoughlyWhat to expect
Dec to FebCold, foggy, quiet. Proper layers, a warm jacket, gloves
Mar to MayWarm, drier, good visibility. The most comfortable riding
Jun to AugHot, green, heavy rain. Waterfalls at full flow, slippery roads
Sep to NovThe best window. Dry roads, gold rice, buckwheat, and busiest

Travellers from Seoul will find the winter cold entirely familiar and are the least likely of the three to underpack. Travellers from Taipei and Hong Kong consistently underestimate it, because a subtropical winter is not the same as a mountain plateau in fog.

Pack: a proper warm jacket for November to March, layers in every month, a rain jacket regardless of season, closed shoes with grip, gloves if you are on a bike at all, a dry bag, a power bank and cash in small notes.

Food, and what will feel familiar

have dinner with looptrails in a homestay (2)

Genuinely easier for this audience than for most.

Northern Vietnamese food will feel less foreign to travellers from these three cities than it does to Western visitors: rice, noodles, broths, greens, grilled meat, tofu, plenty of fresh herbs, and a lot of shared dishes at one table. The homestay dinner format, where everything arrives at once and everyone eats together, is familiar rather than strange.

Worth trying: the northern noodle soups, sticky rice with grilled meat, roadside corn on the passes, and Trung Khanh chestnuts in autumn if you continue into Cao Bang.

Homestay evenings usually involve shared rice wine poured around the table with toasts. Declining is completely normal, and if you would rather not drink at all, tell your guide beforehand and it will be handled quietly.

Dietary requirements are best raised at the enquiry stage rather than on arrival, because homestay cooks can do a great deal with notice and very little without it. If you need halal food specifically, we wrote a separate honest guide to what is and is not possible in these provinces.

Money

Currency. Vietnamese dong. Withdraw in Hanoi and Ha Giang City rather than expecting ATMs in villages.

Cards. Widely accepted in Hanoi, patchy in Ha Giang City, essentially not accepted in the mountains.

Mobile payment. The apps you use at home do not work here. Vietnam has its own ecosystem and cash is the reliable option in the mountains.

Small notes. Ask for them when you change money.

Fees. Check what your bank charges for international withdrawals before you go, and take fewer, larger amounts.

Adding Cao Bang

cao bang loop with looptrails in ban gioc waterfall (3)

If you have a week rather than a long weekend, this is the upgrade worth knowing about.

Cao Bang is the province east of Ha Giang: a waterfall spread across the Chinese border, a large cave you walk through, a jade green river you can swim in, craft villages where blacksmiths still work at the roadside, and a mountain with a natural hole punched through the ridge.

Almost nobody from your three cities has been, and the connecting road through Bao Lac is one of the best rides in the north. Riding it means you see both provinces without going back to Hanoi in between.

The Ha Giang and Cao Bang combined route runs over five days and needs roughly seven to eight days including travel. Our Cao Bang guides cover what is actually there.

Which option is best for you: easy rider, jeep or self drive

ha giang loop for a family in thai an waterfall

Easy rider is what most travellers from these three cities take, and for readers from Taipei and Hong Kong it is one of only two legal options. You ride pillion behind an experienced local rider, your bag is strapped down properly, and you spend the day looking at the landscape rather than the road surface. No licence needed at all.

A jeep if you are travelling as a family, with parents, with anyone who does not want to be on a bike, or in the wet season. Nothing on the route requires two wheels, and since the price covers the whole vehicle rather than a seat, a group of four gets the best value. Groups from this region are frequently four or five people travelling together, which is exactly the size where a jeep stops being expensive. There is more on what the day is like in the comfort guide.

Self drive only if your documents genuinely check out. For Korean travellers that means confirming which convention your IDP is issued under before you book. For Taipei and Hong Kong it is not realistically available. We handle motorbike rental in Ha Giang for riders whose paperwork works.

Book once your flights are confirmed. Most guests book one to three months ahead, and the autumn window fills first, which is exactly when your holidays fall.

Mistakes travellers from this region make

start a trip from ha giang city with easy riders

Assuming no visa is needed. True for Seoul, not for Taipei or Hong Kong.

Assuming the IDP works. Not for Hong Kong or Taiwan, and unclear for Korea.

Booking Lunar New Year without checking Tet. The most expensive mistake available on this page.

Aiming at the first week of October. Best conditions, worst availability, overlapping Golden Week.

Flying into Ho Chi Minh City. Wrong end of the country.

Packing for a subtropical winter. Ha Giang in January is a mountain plateau in fog, not a mild city winter.

Expecting your payment apps to work. They will not. Bring cash.

Taking the two day loop when three was possible. The extra day is the best value decision on the trip.

Ready to work out your dates? Message us on WhatsApp with your flight times, how many days you have and whether anyone in the group rides. Flight timing at both ends decides which version of this trip is realistic, and we will tell you straight if your dates do not work rather than selling you a rushed version of it.

No. South Korean passport holders can enter Vietnam without a visa for stays of up to 45 days. Your passport needs at least six months validity and two blank pages, and rules change, so confirm close to your travel dates.

Yes. Taiwan is not on Vietnam’s visa exemption list, so you need a visa before travelling. The e visa is the straightforward route: applied for online, valid for stays of up to 90 days, with multiple entries and a few working days of processing
