Northern Vietnam is closer to you than Bali. It is closer than Tokyo, closer than Perth, and closer than most of the places people from Singapore and Kuala Lumpur book for a long weekend.
Fly to Hanoi in roughly three and a half hours, sleep on a night bus, and you wake up in a landscape of limestone plateau and cliff roads that looks nothing like anywhere else in Southeast Asia. No visa to apply for. One hour of time difference. You can leave on a Thursday evening and be back at work on Wednesday.
This guide is written specifically for people travelling from Singapore and Malaysia: how the days actually work, which public holidays line up with which conditions in Ha Giang, and the two things about this trip that catch people from tropical cities out every single time.

It is close. Direct flights run from both cities to Hanoi and the flight is roughly three and a half hours. That is shorter than a lot of domestic flights people take for granted.
No visa to apply for. Singaporean and Malaysian citizens get thirty days visa free in Vietnam. Nothing to fill in, nothing to pay, nothing to wait for.
One hour of time difference. Vietnam is an hour behind Singapore and Malaysia. There is no jet lag and no wasted first day.
It uses long weekends properly. Most short haul options from this region are cities and beaches. This is neither, and that is the appeal: you come back with something that does not look like everyone else’s holiday.
It is not expensive. Northern Vietnam is one of the cheaper places in the region once you are on the ground, and Ha Giang more so than anywhere on the coast.

The flight. Several carriers fly direct from Singapore Changi and from Kuala Lumpur to Hanoi. Schedules and fares change constantly, so compare properly rather than defaulting to whichever airline you usually use. Fly into Hanoi, not Ho Chi Minh City. The loop is in the far north and the two cities are a long way apart.
Hanoi to Ha Giang. Overnight sleeper buses and limousine vans run from Hanoi to Ha Giang City. The overnight option is the right one: you sleep on the bus, arrive early, and start riding the same morning without losing daylight or paying for a hotel night.
Arriving late. If your flight lands in the evening, the overnight bus works perfectly. If it lands very late, you may need a night in Hanoi first, which is worth building into the plan rather than discovering at the airport.
Coming back. The same in reverse. A night bus from Ha Giang gets you into Hanoi in the morning, which suits a midday or afternoon flight home.
Luggage. Bring cabin sized bags if you can. You will not want a large suitcase on this trip, and most accommodation in Ha Giang City will store the bag you do not need on the loop.

Singaporean and Malaysian citizens can enter Vietnam without a visa for stays of up to thirty days.
What you still need:
Immigration rules change, so confirm the current position close to your travel dates rather than assuming this article is still accurate when you read it. If you plan to stay longer than thirty days, or to leave Vietnam and come back within the same trip, look at the e visa instead.

The honest arithmetic, because this is where short trips go wrong.
The loop itself runs as two, three or four days. Around that you need travel days at each end, and the night buses do most of the heavy lifting because they travel while you sleep.

Our recommendation for a first trip from this region: the three day loop with a public holiday attached, which usually means four or five days away in total.
The two day version exists and it works, but it is genuinely rushed and it skips the southern half of the loop. If you have the option of one extra day, take it.

Three shapes that work, adjust for your own flight times.
The long weekend. Thursday evening flight to Hanoi, straight onto the night bus. Friday and Saturday on the loop. Saturday night bus back. Sunday morning in Hanoi, afternoon flight home. Tight, doable, and you will want a nap on Monday.
The standard. Wednesday or Thursday night flight, night bus, three day loop, night bus back, one day in Hanoi for food and the old quarter, fly home. This is the version we would book.
The proper one. Fly in, night bus, four day loop including Du Gia, night bus back, a day in Hanoi. Roughly a week including travel, and the difference between the four day and three day loop is larger than the extra day suggests.
Build in a buffer if you can. Mountain weather and bus schedules both move, and a trip with zero slack between the last bus and the flight home is a trip with a bad ending waiting to happen.

This is the part worth planning around, because both countries have plenty of public holidays and they are not equally good for Ha Giang.

Deepavali is the best single alignment on this list. October and November are the peak season in Ha Giang for a reason: buckwheat flowers across the plateau, clear air and dry roads. It is also the busiest period, so book early.
Malaysia Day and Merdeka are the underrated ones. The rice is turning, the wet season is ending and the plateau is green rather than gold, and it is noticeably quieter than October.
Movable religious holidays shift every year, so check your own dates against the seasons and ask us if you are not sure what you will be riding into.

Tet, the Vietnamese Lunar New Year. This usually falls around the same time as Chinese New Year, which is exactly when a lot of people from Singapore and Malaysia have time off, so it catches this market more than any other.
During Tet, transport across Vietnam is packed and expensive, many businesses close, and homestays in the mountains are often shut or hosting family rather than guests. It is a wonderful time to be in a Vietnamese home and a difficult time to be a tourist trying to move around. Some operators do not run tours at all that week.
If your only window is Chinese New Year, ask us specifically about your dates before you book anything. The week either side is usually fine. The week itself is not.
Late April into early May. Vietnam has its own public holidays on 30 April and 1 May, which produces one of the biggest domestic travel surges of the year. It also happens to coincide with the Labour Day holiday in both Singapore and Malaysia.
The result is that everyone in Vietnam and a lot of people from this region want the same accommodation on the same weekend. It is still a good time to ride. It is a bad time to turn up without a booking.
The same applies around Vietnam’s National Day on 2 September.

This is the single most common mistake people from Singapore and KL make on this trip.
You live somewhere that is warm all year. Ha Giang is not. The plateau is high, and between roughly December and February it is genuinely cold, with fog on the passes and mornings that are colder still if you are on a motorbike moving through them.
People arrive with a light jacket because it is Southeast Asia and are uncomfortable within an hour of gaining altitude. It is the thing guests mention most often afterwards.

If you are coming in winter, buy or borrow a proper jacket before you leave. There is limited useful cold weather clothing available in Ha Giang City, and what there is will not be your size.

Here is something almost nobody tells travellers from this region.
Most foreign visitors cannot legally ride a motorbike in Vietnam. Vietnam recognises International Driving Permits issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention, and Britain, the United States, Australia and Canada mostly issue the 1949 version instead, which is not accepted. Their travellers are stuck.
You are in a better position. Vietnam participates in the ASEAN Agreement on the Recognition of Domestic Driving Licences, under which a valid national motorcycle licence from an ASEAN member state, including Singapore and Malaysia, is recognised without a separate IDP.
Three things before you get excited:
Your licence must actually cover motorcycles. A Singapore Class 3 or a Malaysian D is a car licence. You need the motorcycle class: Class 2, 2A or 2B in Singapore, or B, B1 or B2 in Malaysia. Plenty of people in both countries hold car only licences and do not think about this until they are standing next to a bike in Ha Giang City.
Enforcement is not always the same as the rule. There are consistent reports of traffic police asking for a 1968 IDP anyway and not accepting a foreign national licence at the roadside. Carry everything you have, and if your licence is difficult to read at a glance, an IDP alongside it does no harm.
Insurance is a separate question entirely. A great many travel policies exclude motorbike accidents regardless of your licence position, or exclude engine sizes above a threshold, or exclude riding as a passenger. Read the exclusions in your actual policy wording before you travel, not the summary page.

Worth being direct about, because most tour pages simply do not mention it.
There is no halal certified food in Ha Giang. The mountain provinces have no halal infrastructure, pork is central to the local cuisine, and homestay meals are cooked in a shared kitchen and served communally at one table. Nobody is going to be able to certify anything for you.
What can be arranged, with notice: meals without pork, vegetarian meals, and seafood or vegetable based dishes. Homestay cooks are accommodating when they know in advance, and Vietnamese mountain cooking has a great deal of vegetable, tofu, rice and noodle food in it.
What cannot be arranged: certified halal preparation, or separate kitchen equipment.
If this matters to you, tell your operator at the enquiry stage rather than on arrival, be specific about what you need and what you can accept, and consider bringing some food with you for the gaps. Many Malaysian Muslim travellers do this trip and enjoy it, and the ones who have the best time are the ones who set expectations before they left.
The same applies to allergies, vegetarianism and anything else. Tell us early, get it written down in Vietnamese, and it will be handled.

Currency. Vietnamese dong. Bring some cash and use ATMs in Hanoi and Ha Giang City rather than expecting them in the villages.
Cards. Widely accepted in Hanoi, patchy in Ha Giang City, essentially not accepted in the mountains. Entrance fees, homestay extras, roadside food and repairs are all cash.
Small notes. Get some when you change money. Nobody in a mountain village wants to break a large note for a bottle of water.
Withdrawals. Take fewer, larger amounts to avoid stacking up ATM fees at both ends.
Do not change large amounts at the airport. Change enough to get you moving and do the rest in the city.

If you have a week rather than a long weekend, this is the upgrade worth knowing about.
Cao Bang is the province east of Ha Giang: a waterfall spread across the Chinese border, a large cave you walk through, a jade green river you can swim in, craft villages where blacksmiths still work at the roadside, and a mountain with a natural hole through the ridge.
Almost nobody from this region has been, and the road that connects the two provinces through Bao Lac is one of the best in the north. Riding it means you see both without going back to Hanoi in between.
The Ha Giang and Cao Bang combined route runs over five days and needs roughly seven to eight days including travel from Singapore or KL, which makes it a school holiday or an annual leave trip rather than a long weekend. Self drive if you ride at home and hold the motorcycle class on your licence. Riders from Singapore and Malaysia have an easier path here than most nationalities, subject to the caveats above. Easy rider if you want to be on a bike without riding it. You sit behind an experienced local rider, your bag is strapped down properly, and you look at the landscape instead of the road surface. No licence needed at all. It is the most popular thing we run and it is the right answer for most first time visitors from this region, particularly anyone who last rode a bike in the city.
A jeep if you are travelling as a family, if somebody in the group does not ride, if you are bringing parents or children, or if you are coming in the wet season and would rather stay dry. The price covers the whole vehicle rather than a seat, so a group of four works out best.
Groups from this region are often four or five people travelling together, which is exactly the size where a jeep stops being expensive.
Book once your flights are confirmed. Most guests book one to three months ahead, and the October and November window fills first.

Flying into Ho Chi Minh City. It is the wrong end of the country. Fly to Hanoi.
Booking Chinese New Year without checking Tet. The single most expensive mistake available on this page.
Packing for Southeast Asia. You are going to a cold mountain plateau in winter. Pack for that.
Assuming a car licence covers a motorbike. It does not, in either country.
Cutting the buffer to zero. A night bus that is delayed and a flight you cannot miss is a bad combination.
Taking the two day loop when three was possible. The extra day is the best value decision on the whole trip.
Not mentioning dietary needs until arrival. Homestay cooks can do a great deal with notice and very little without it.
Bringing a large suitcase. Leave it in Ha Giang City or, better, do not bring it.
