Almost every photograph of a jeep tour is taken from outside the jeep. A vehicle on a pass, mountains behind, nobody in it. Beautiful, and completely useless if what you actually want to know is whether you are going to enjoy sitting in it for eight hours a day for three days.

This page answers that. What the ride feels like, why people get car sick on these particular roads and what reduces it, where to sit, how loud it is, what happens when it rains, how often you get out, and the things about travelling by jeep that are genuinely worse than being on a bike.

That last part matters. A jeep is the right answer for a lot of people and it is not the right answer for everyone, and you should be able to tell which you are before you pay.

What a day in a jeep actually feels like

Less like a bus tour than people expect, and more like a road trip with someone else driving.

You are in a small vehicle with one to three other people, a driver and usually a guide. The windows or the sides are open more often than not, so you are not sealed off from the outside: you can hear the road, smell the villages and shout at the driver to stop, which people do constantly and which is the point.

The rhythm is stop and go rather than a long drive with a lunch break in the middle. On a normal day you will get in and out of the vehicle somewhere between eight and fifteen times. Some stops are two minutes at the roadside because the light did something. Some are an hour at a waterfall.

The driving legs between stops are usually short. It is a mountain province and the distances are not large. What makes the days long is the stopping, which is the correct way round.

Motion sickness, the real comfort issue

ha giang loop for a female group with looptrails Northern Vietnam Itinerary

If something spoils a day in a jeep here, it is this, not the seats.

Why these roads specifically. Northern Vietnam’s mountain roads are built as continuous switchbacks. There are almost no long straights, so you are being swung left and right constantly, sometimes for an hour at a time. Add a lot of looking sideways at scenery and, for many people, a phone, and it is close to a laboratory design for making people feel sick.

The uncomfortable irony: people who never get motion sick on a motorbike often do in a vehicle. That is not weakness, it is physics. When you ride, you control the movement and lean into it, so your body predicts every input. As a passenger you predict nothing, and the mismatch between what your inner ear feels and what your eyes see is exactly what produces the nausea.

So a jeep is more comfortable than a bike in every respect except this one, and it is worth knowing that before you book if you are prone to it.

What actually helps, roughly in order of effectiveness:

  • Look at the horizon, at the road ahead, not at a screen. This is the single biggest factor and it is also the hardest habit to break. Phones and books are the main cause of car sickness on these roads.
  • Sit forward. The front seat is the best place in the vehicle for this, and the middle of the back with a clear view through the windscreen is second.
  • Face forward. If a vehicle has a side facing bench, that is the worst position for motion sickness. Ask what the seating configuration is before you book if this is a concern.
  • Air moving. Open the side, open a window, keep cool air on your face.
  • Anticipate the corners. This one is genuinely useful and nobody mentions it: watch the road ahead and let your body lean into the turn slightly before it arrives, the way a rider does. It converts you from passive to semi active and it helps a lot.
  • Eat something light before driving legs. Not a big meal, not an empty stomach.
  • No alcohol the night before a long driving day. Including the rice wine at the homestay, which is the local hazard.
  • Stop often. Ten minutes standing outside resets most people, and this is the easiest thing to change.
  • Tell your driver on day one. This is the most underused option. A driver who knows changes their line, brakes earlier and smoother, and adds stops. They cannot do that if nobody says anything.

Remedies people use: ginger in various forms, acupressure wristbands, and over the counter medication. If you get car sick reliably at home, talk to a pharmacist or your doctor before you travel and bring whatever they suggest, rather than trying to find something specific in a mountain town. We are not going to give you medical advice beyond that.

If it happens anyway, say so immediately rather than enduring it. Getting out for ten minutes at the first sign is a completely different outcome from getting out after an hour.

Not sure whether the jeep or a bike suits you better? It usually comes down to two things: whether anyone in the group cannot or does not want to ride, and how you handle being a passenger on winding roads. Tell us your situation and we will give you a straight recommendation, including when that recommendation is the cheaper option.

Where to sit

ha giang loop for a group with easy riders vietnam adventure travel cost

More consequential than people expect, and almost nobody thinks about it until day two.

The front passenger seat is the best seat for view, for conversation with the driver and guide, and for motion sickness. It is also the one everyone wants.

The back gives you a wider field of view sideways, which is better for photographs out of the side and worse for your stomach.

The middle of the back, where there is one, gives you a view through the windscreen, which is the compromise position.

Rotate. This is the single best piece of advice in this section and groups almost never do it. Agree on day one that the front seat rotates every day, or every half day. It removes the quiet resentment that otherwise builds by day three, and it means everyone gets the good seat for at least part of the trip.

If someone in the group gets car sick, they get the front seat, permanently, and nobody argues about it. That is not a favour, it is group logistics.

Getting in and out. You will do it eight to fifteen times a day. Older and ex military vehicles sit high with a substantial step. If that is a consideration for anyone in your group, for any reason, ask about the step height and whether a step is available before you book. It is a normal question.

Noise, wind, sun and rain

ha giang loop with looptrails in nho que river

The part people are least prepared for, because the photographs do not carry sound.

Noise. Open jeeps are loud. At speed, with the sides open, conversation across the vehicle is limited to short sentences and gestures. People book a jeep specifically so they can talk to each other, then discover that at moving speed they mostly cannot. You can talk at every stop, at every viewpoint and over every meal, which is plenty, but set the expectation correctly.

Wind. Constant, and pleasant in summer. Long hair needs tying back and loose items need securing, because anything that can leave the vehicle will.

Sun. Open sided means exposed. Sun cream, a hat that will not blow off and sunglasses, in every season. Sun at altitude is stronger than you are used to at sea level and people burn on cool days without noticing.

Cold. A jeep on a winter pass with the sides open is cold, and moving air makes it colder. Winter in the northern mountains is genuinely cold to begin with. Layers.

Rain. Ask what the vehicle has: a soft top, side curtains, a hard top, or nothing. Most open vehicles here can be closed up to a degree and few of them are watertight in the way a modern car is. In heavy rain you may get some spray, and you will be considerably drier than anyone on a motorbike, which is the comparison that matters.

Dust. In the dry months, on unsealed sections and around road works, an open vehicle collects dust. Keep camera gear in a bag rather than on the seat, and expect to arrive slightly grubby, which is part of it.

Ride quality on these roads

ha giang loop with looptrails in tham ma pass

Honest, because expectations set by a modern SUV will not survive contact with an older jeep.

The main roads are fine. Sealed, reasonably maintained, with occasional broken edges and patches of road works. On these the ride is comfortable and the corners are the only thing you notice.

Older vehicles ride firm. A classic or ex military jeep has simpler suspension than a modern car and it transmits more of the surface to you. That is not a fault, it is what those vehicles are, and it is worth knowing which one you are booking.

The rough sections are short. On the Cao Bang loop the roughest surface is the access track towards God’s Eye Mountain, which is dirt and stone. On Ha Giang, the main circuit is sealed throughout. Neither is difficult in a vehicle, and both are noticeably better in a vehicle than on two wheels.

Village lanes are concrete or packed dirt, narrow, and taken at walking pace. This is where a jeep gives up a little to a motorbike, which can get down lanes a vehicle cannot.

How often you stop

tourists of looptrails in lo lo chai village

The thing that most distinguishes a jeep tour from any kind of bus tour.

Scheduled stops: the viewpoints, the waterfall, the cave, the villages, lunch. Somewhere between five and eight on a normal day.

Unscheduled stops: as many as you like. This is the real product. A jeep with a driver who understands the day stops because the light changed, because there is a buffalo in a field doing something interesting, because somebody wants a photograph, or because somebody needs five minutes.

Say so on day one. Guides and drivers calibrate to the group. A group that never asks to stop gets a smooth efficient day, which is not what most people came for. Tell them early that you would rather stop more and cover less.

Comfort breaks. Toilets exist at the main sites and in the towns and are basic in between. Say something in a town rather than waiting for a gap in the mountains.

A day with fewer stops, longer at each, beats a day with more stops. True for photographers, for families, for anyone prone to motion sickness and honestly for everyone.

Who is in the vehicle with you

visit border of vietnam and china by jeep with looptrails

Worth knowing, because it changes the feel of the trip.

A driver, local, who knows the roads far better than any visitor and whose judgement about weather and conditions is worth deferring to.

A guide, who may or may not be the same person depending on the tour and the language you need. Ask which when you book, because a driver who is also your guide is a different experience from having both.

Your group. Our jeeps take up to four guests and the price covers the vehicle rather than the seat, so you are not sharing with strangers unless you have arranged to. That is a meaningful difference from a seat on a group tour, and it is why a group of four gets the best value.

Language. Confirm the guide’s English level when you book if that matters to you. It is a fair question and a straight answer is easy to give

Luggage

start a trip with looptrails by rubicon jeep

Where it goes. In the vehicle with you, which is one of the plainest advantages over a motorbike. No strapping, no dry bags, no leaving things behind.

How much. Ask how much space there actually is with your group size, because a jeep with four guests and four large cases is a different proposition from two guests with backpacks. If you are travelling with a lot of gear, say so at the booking stage.

What to keep with you rather than packed: water, layers, sun cream, camera, anything you will want during the day. Digging through a bag at every stop gets old quickly.

Leave the rest. Most accommodation in Ha Giang City and Cao Bang City will store the bag you do not need on the loop.

The honest downsides of a jeep

ha giang loop for a family in thai an waterfall (2)

Every page about jeep tours lists the advantages. Here is the other side, so you can make an actual decision.

It is less immersive than a bike. On a motorbike you are in the landscape, and in a vehicle you are looking at it. Open sided helps a lot and it does not close the gap entirely. Riders will tell you this and they are not wrong.

Some lanes are closed to you. Narrow village lanes, tight tracks and a few of the better river access points suit a bike better. Not many, but some.

Motion sickness affects passengers, not riders. Covered above and it is the one real comfort disadvantage.

Older vehicles are noisy and firm. If you were imagining a quiet air conditioned cabin, that is a different kind of vehicle and a different kind of trip.

It is more expensive for one person. Because the price covers the vehicle, a solo traveller pays for the whole thing. For two it is competitive, for three or four it is the best value on the page, and for one it usually is not.

You are on somebody else’s line through the corners. Some people find that mildly frustrating. Most stop noticing by the second morning.

None of these outweigh the advantages for most travellers, particularly families, non riders, anyone travelling in the wet season and anyone carrying gear. But you should choose knowing them.

Questions worth asking before you book

ha giang loop with looptrails in ma pi leng pass

Any operator should answer all of these without hesitating.

  1. Which vehicle is it, and can I see photographs of the inside rather than the outside?
  2. What is the seating configuration, and does the rear seat face forward or sideways?
  3. How high is the step to get in, and is there a step available?
  4. What happens in heavy rain: soft top, side curtains, hard top?
  5. How much luggage space is there with my group size?
  6. Is the driver also the guide, and what is their English like?
  7. Can we ask to stop whenever we want, and how flexible is the daily schedule?
  8. What seatbelts are fitted, and can a child seat be secured if we need one?

The answers tell you as much about the operator as about the vehicle. Vague answers to specific questions are the signal to keep looking.

What to bring for the vehicle

ha giang loop with looptrails in can ty pass

Small list, all of it about being in an open vehicle for several days.

  • Sunglasses, for wind as much as sun
  • A hat that will not blow off, or none at all
  • Sun cream, reapplied, including on cool days
  • A layer you can put on and take off without stopping, because temperature changes with altitude constantly
  • A scarf or buff, for wind, dust and cold
  • A dry bag or dust proof bag for camera gear
  • Water, kept with you rather than in the boot
  • Something for motion sickness if you are prone to it, sourced at home
  • A power bank, since you should not count on a charging point being fitted
  • Hair tie, obvious once you have spent a day at speed with the sides open

Which option is best for you: jeep, easy rider or self drive

ha giang cao bang by motorbike Ha Giang Cao Bang Self-Drive

A jeep if you are travelling with anyone who does not ride, with children or older parents, in the wet season, with camera gear or with a group of three or four. It is the most comfortable, the most weatherproof and the best value per person once there are a few of you. See the jeep tours.

Easy rider if you want to be in the landscape rather than looking at it, you are travelling light and motion sickness in vehicles is a problem for you. You ride pillion behind an experienced local rider, which gives you the immersion of a bike with none of the responsibility. See the easy rider option.

Self drive if you ride at home and hold the correct documents: passport, a home motorbike licence and an International Driving Permit issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention. The 1949 style permit is not recognised in Vietnam. The paperwork guide covers it, and we handle motorbike rental in Ha Giang if you want a bike without a tour.

Mixed groups are normal. Some of the group in the jeep and some on bikes is an arrangement we run constantly, and it often solves a disagreement that has been running since the planning stage.

Book once your dates are set. Most guests book one to three months ahead, and jeep availability is tighter than motorbikes, particularly between September and November.

Still weighing it up? Message us on WhatsApp with your group size, whether anyone gets car sick and whether anyone would rather not be on a bike. Those three answers usually settle it in one message.

faq

More comfortable than a motorbike in almost every respect: weather protection, luggage, no physical tiredness at the end of a day and everyone can travel regardless of whether they ride. The one exception is motion sickness, which affects passengers in vehicles far more than riders on bikes.

Some people do, because these roads are continuous switchbacks with almost no straights. Looking at the road ahead rather than a screen is the single biggest thing that helps, followed by sitting forward, keeping air moving and stopping often. Tell your driver on day one and they will adjust how they drive

The front passenger seat, for the view, the conversation and the lowest motion sickness risk. The middle of the back is second best because you can see through the windscreen. Agree to rotate the front seat between days, because otherwise it becomes an unspoken issue by day three

Yes, if the sides are open. Conversation across the vehicle at speed is limited to short sentences, which surprises people who booked a jeep specifically so they could talk. You can talk at every stop, over every meal and at every viewpoint, which is most of the day

Ask the operator what the vehicle has: a soft top, side curtains or a hard top. Most open vehicles here close up to a degree without being watertight, so you may get some spray in heavy rain. You will be far drier than anyone on a motorbike

Somewhere between eight and fifteen times a day when you include unscheduled stops, which are the real advantage. Say on day one that you would rather stop more and cover less, because guides calibrate to the group and a group that never asks gets an efficient day instead of a good one

Better for families, non riders, wet season travel, camera gear and groups of three or four. Worse for immersion, for narrow village lanes and for anyone who gets motion sick as a passenger. Both cover exactly the same route and see the same places

Up to four guests, plus the driver and guide. The price covers the whole vehicle rather than a seat, so the cost per person drops sharply with each additional traveller and a solo traveller pays the most

Yes, and it travels in the vehicle with you rather than strapped to a bike, which is one of the plainest advantages. Ask how much space there is for your specific group size, and leave anything you do not need on the loop in storage at your accommodation

Sunglasses for wind as well as sun, a hat that will not blow off, sun cream reapplied even on cool days, a layer you can add and remove easily, and something to tie long hair back. A scarf or buff handles wind, dust and cold all at once

It depends on the tour, so ask when you book. Having a separate driver and guide is a different experience from one person doing both, and it is worth confirming their English level at the same time if that matters to you.

Yes, and you should. Unscheduled stops are the main thing that separates a private jeep from any kind of group tour, and drivers here are used to it. The only stops with real timing constraints are the ones that depend on light or on a boat
