Ha Giang and Ha Long Bay: Mountains and Sea in One Trip

Four days on a motorbike across a limestone plateau takes more out of you than the photographs suggest. Early starts, mountain roads, homestay evenings that run later than intended, and by the last morning most people are quietly looking forward to sitting down somewhere warm and doing nothing.

That instinct is correct and the pairing is a good one. The problem is that almost every itinerary handles it badly, in two specific ways: it treats a bay cruise as a beach holiday, and it ignores the fact that the mountains and the northern coast are at their best in different months.

Here is the honest version. We run the mountain half and nothing on the coast, so everything below the mountains is a recommendation rather than a sale

The short version

ha giang loop for a couple in bac sum pass
  • A bay trip is not a beach holiday. Both are good. They are different things and the difference matters.
  • The seasons do not line up. Mountains peak September to November, northern beaches peak in summer.
  • September is the compromise month and it is a genuinely good one.
  • Real sand in the north means the Quang Ninh islands, which is a summer proposition.
  • Outside summer, a beach means a flight south, and which part of the south depends on the month.
  • Give the coast at least two nights. One night is a transfer, not a rest.

A bay is not a beach

Simple family homestay room in a village on the Ha Giang Loop

The distinction that decides whether this pairing works for you.

A bay trip is a boat in Ha Long, Lan Ha or Bai Tu Long: limestone islands, kayaking into lagoons, a night on the water, swimming off the back of the boat if the season suits. It is one of the better experiences in Vietnam and it is not sand and a towel.

A beach holiday is a stretch of sand, a sea you walk into, somewhere to eat nearby and no schedule at all.

The mistake is booking a bay cruise expecting the second and getting the first. People come off four days of riding wanting to switch off, and a cruise has a timetable: dinner at this time, kayaking at that time, cave visit in the morning. It is a very pleasant schedule and it is still a schedule.

Who should take a bay trip: anyone who wants to see the karst seascape, which is genuinely world class, and does not mind the structure.

Who should take a beach instead: anyone whose main requirement after the mountains is to stop being organised.

Cat Ba sits between the two. It is an island with actual beaches, a national park and a base from which to do Lan Ha Bay as a day trip rather than an overnight cruise. For most people combining mountains and sea in the north, this is the answer.

The season problem

Ha Giang and Ha Long Bay

This decides your month and almost nobody explains it.

The mountains are at their best from September to November. Dry roads, gold rice, buckwheat on the plateau, clear air.

The northern coast is a summer destination. Warm sea, beach weather, and the islands operating at full service roughly from late spring into early autumn. By late October the northern coast is cooling, and in winter nobody is swimming in Ha Long Bay.

Which means the two peaks do not meet.

If you goThe mountainsThe northern coast
May to JuneGreen, warm, rains startingBeach season starting, sea warming, quiet
July to AugustWet, dramatic, waterfalls at full flowBeach season proper, and typhoon risk
SeptemberTurning good, rice going gold, clearingStill warm, season winding down, quieter
OctoberThe best month in the mountainsCooling, bay is fine, beaches are not
NovemberBuckwheat, peak plateau seasonNot a beach month in the north
December to FebruaryCold, foggy, atmosphericCold sea, bay cruises run, no swimming

September is the compromise and it is a good one. The mountains are coming into their best and the sea is still warm enough to use. If you want both halves to work, this is the month.

What counts as a beach in the north

ha long bay

If you want sand rather than a boat, here is the honest map.

Cat Ba has beaches. They are small and they are real, the island has a national park behind them and Lan Ha Bay in front, and it is the most practical beach base within reach of Hanoi.

Quan Lan and Minh Chau, in Bai Tu Long, are the genuine northern beach answer that almost nobody writes about: long stretches of sand, very few foreign visitors, and a pace that is closer to doing nothing than anywhere else on this list. They are reached by ferry and the services are seasonal, so check what is running close to your dates.

Co To, further out, has the best beaches in the north by most accounts and the most committed journey. Summer only in practice.

What they have in common: they are summer destinations, they are quiet, and the infrastructure is modest. That last part is a feature if you have just spent four days in mountain homestays and a problem if you were picturing a resort.

What the north does not have is a year round beach scene. If you are travelling between November and March and sand is non negotiable, the answer is a flight, covered next.

Our read, for somebody coming off the mountains: Cat Ba and Lan Ha. You get the karst seascape, you get a beach, you can do the bay as a day trip rather than a scheduled overnight, and the island has enough going on that a slow two or three days works.

When to fly south instead

ha long bay

If your mountain trip falls in October, November or winter and you want a real beach, the honest answer is to get on a plane.

Da Nang and Hoi An are the obvious choice and they have a catch. The central coast has its wet season roughly from September into December, which is exactly when the northern mountains are at their best. An October beach trip to Hoi An can be a washout, and people book it every year on the assumption that south means dry.

From around November the far south comes into its dry season. Mui Ne and Phu Quoc both turn reliable as the northern winter sets in, which makes them the better pairing for a late autumn or winter mountain trip.

The practical rule: in September, stay north. In October, the central coast is a gamble and the far south is still transitioning. From November onwards, fly past Da Nang to the south.

What it costs you: a domestic flight each way and most of a day at each end. That is a real cost on a two week trip and a reasonable one if sand is the point.

Typhoons

tourists of looptrails in ban gico waterfall in cao bang

Worth naming, because it is a genuine planning factor rather than a theoretical one.

The northern and central coast has a typhoon season roughly from July into October. Storms affect the coast far more than the mountains, and their practical effect on a trip is usually disruption rather than danger: ferries suspended, bay cruises cancelled, flights delayed, a couple of days lost.

What to do about it:

  • Build a buffer into any summer or early autumn trip that includes the coast.
  • Do the mountains first and the coast second if your dates fall in the season, so a cancelled boat costs you the end of the trip rather than the middle.
  • Take travel insurance that covers weather disruption and read what it actually covers.
  • Do not book a tight connection between an island ferry and an international flight.

Ferries to the outer islands are the first thing to stop running, which is another argument for Cat Ba over Co To if your dates are in the season.

Planning the mountain half? The timing of the coast usually decides the month, and the month decides which mountain route makes sense. Send us your dates and we will tell you honestly what the mountains will be doing then. Start with the Ha Giang Loop tours.

The best month for both

ma pi leng pass, see the nho que river below

September, if you want one answer.

The mountains are drying out and the rice is turning, the sea is still warm enough to swim in, the summer crowds have gone from the coast and the autumn crowds have not yet arrived in the mountains. It is the only month where both halves are genuinely working.

October is the better mountain month and the worse coast month. If the mountains are the priority and the sea is a bonus, take October and do a bay trip rather than a beach.

Late May and June is the other good pairing, with green mountains, warm sea, and the rains not yet at full strength. Underrated, and considerably quieter than September.

What we would not do is plan a beach into a December or January mountain trip in the north. Do the mountains properly, enjoy the cold and the fog, and put the sea on a different trip or a flight south.

How long to give the coast

ha giang loop with looptrails in tham ma pass

Two nights minimum. One night is a transfer with a view, and you will spend it travelling and unpacking.

Three nights is the right number after four or five days of riding. Enough to sleep late twice, which is the actual point.

A week is too long unless the beach is the trip and the mountains are the add on, in which case this article is the wrong way round for you.

Where it goes in the itinerary: after the mountains, always. The coast is a decompression stop and it does not work as a warm up, because you will spend it impatient to get north.

A shape for the trip

Two weeks, which is the length this pairing wants.

DaysWhere
1Arrive Hanoi, sleep off the flight
2Hanoi, night bus north in the evening
3 to 6The Ha Giang Loop, four days
7Night bus back, arrive Hanoi morning, travel to Cat Ba
8 to 10Cat Ba and Lan Ha Bay: a boat day, a beach day, a nothing day
11Back to Hanoi
12Hanoi, buffer day
13Fly home

If you want Cao Bang as well, swap the four day loop for the five day Ha Giang and Cao Bang route and either extend to sixteen days or cut the coast to two nights.

Keep the buffer. Ferries and buses both move, and the day before an international flight is not the day to find that out.

Getting from the mountains to the coast

ha giang loop for a group with looptrails

The leg every itinerary skips over, and it is a full day.

From Ha Giang. Night bus back to Hanoi, arriving in the morning, then east to the coast the same day. Roughly six to seven hours on the bus, then a few hours to Cat Ba or the bay depending on which route and which transfer you take.

From Cao Bang, if you have done both provinces, the same shape: overnight to Hanoi, then east.

Do not try to do it all in one push. Arriving at the coast after a night bus and a transfer means your first afternoon by the sea is spent asleep, which is a waste of an expensive day.

Two better options:

Break it in Hanoi. Arrive in the morning, take a hotel, shower properly, eat, do laundry, and go to the coast the next morning fresh. This costs one night and it is the version we would take.

Or go straight through and accept the first day is a write off. Fine if you have three nights on the coast and only really need two.

Book the onward leg before you leave the mountains. Signal is unreliable up there and you do not want to be arranging a transfer from a homestay yard.

Cat Ba specifically involves a ferry or a road and bridge route depending on where you start, and services vary by season and operator. Check what is running close to your dates rather than assuming.

What to do with your mountain gear

ha giang loop with easy riders of looptrails Riding the Ha Giang Loop on Your Period

Small, practical, and nobody writes it.

You will arrive at the coast carrying the wrong wardrobe. A cold weather jacket, layers, gloves, boots and a bag of clothes that have been worn on a motorbike for four days. None of it is any use on a beach and all of it is heavy.

The simplest fix: leave it in Hanoi. Most hotels and hostels store bags whether or not you are staying that night, including on the day you pass through. Take a small bag to the coast with swimwear, shorts and one warm layer for the boat in the evening.

If you are going straight through, do laundry in Hanoi on the way. Same day service is widely available and cheap, and it is the difference between a bag you can live out of and one you are avoiding.

What you actually need on the coast: swimwear, a towel that dries, shorts, a couple of shirts, sun cream, sandals, and one warm layer because evenings on the water are cooler than the day suggests.

What you do not need: anything you bought for the mountains.

One thing worth keeping with you: a dry bag. It earned its place in the mountains and it earns it again on a boat.

Why a rest after the mountains is good planning

tourists of looptrails in ma pi leng pass

Not a filler section. This is the argument for the whole pairing.

You will be more tired than you expect. Four or five days of early starts, mountain roads, altitude changes and late homestay evenings adds up in a way that does not show until you stop.

The standard mistake is following the mountains immediately with another active region, and arriving at it with nothing left. We make the same point about Ba Be in the Cao Bang and Ba Be comparison, and the coast is the bigger version of the same idea.

A beach or an island does something a lake cannot: it removes the option of doing anything. There is no itinerary to follow and no viewpoint you are missing, which is exactly what a tired traveller needs.

And it improves the memory of the mountains. People who go straight home from a loop remember being tired. People who spend three days doing nothing afterwards remember the plateau.

What to know before you book a bay trip

ha giang loop with looptrails by easy riders

Practical, if the bay rather than a beach is your choice.

Cruises have schedules. Dinner, kayaking and the cave visit all happen at set times. If you want to sleep in, take a hotel on Cat Ba and do a day boat instead.

Cabin quality varies enormously and so does what “luxury” means on a booking site. Read recent reviews rather than the description.

The bay gets busy in the main channels. Lan Ha and Bai Tu Long are the quieter water.

Weather cancels boats and operators are generally right to cancel. Build slack.

Swimming depends on the month, and a cruise in January is scenery rather than a swim.

Day boats out of Cat Ba are the flexible option and the one we would take after a mountain trip, because nothing about them is scheduled beyond the departure.

Which option is best for you: self drive, easy rider or jeep

ha giang loop by jeep with looptrails

For the mountain half, since that is what we run.

Easy rider if you want to be on a bike without being responsible for one, which also means arriving at the coast less wrecked than you would otherwise. You ride pillion behind an experienced local rider and no licence is needed.

A jeep if you are travelling with anyone who does not ride, with children, with camera gear, or in the wet season, which is also the beach season. Everything on the route is identical from a vehicle, and the price covers the whole vehicle rather than a seat. There is more in the comfort guide.

Self drive if you ride at home and your documents work: passport, a motorbike licence from home and an International Driving Permit issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention. The 1949 style permit is not recognised in Vietnam. The paperwork guide covers it, and we handle motorbike rental in Ha Giang if you want a bike without a tour.

Book the mountain half once your dates are set. September through November fills first, and September is the month this particular pairing wants.

Mistakes people make planning this

nho que river boat trip with tu san canyon Vietnam vs Nepal

Booking a bay cruise expecting a beach. The most common one and entirely avoidable.

Putting the coast before the mountains. You will be impatient the whole time.

Giving the coast one night. That is a transfer, not a rest.

Flying to Hoi An in October. Central coast wet season, and the assumption that south means dry catches people out every year.

Planning a northern beach in winter. It is not a beach month up there.

No buffer in typhoon season. Ferries stop and flights move.

Booking the outer islands without checking ferries. Services are seasonal.

Trying to add the coast to a ten day trip. Something gets rushed and it is usually the mountains.

Want help picking the month? Message us on WhatsApp with your dates and whether sand or the mountains matters more. That one answer decides everything else, and we will be straight about the half of this trip we do not run.

faq

Yes, and it works best with the mountains first and the coast second as a decompression stop. Allow two weeks, give the coast at least two nights, and be aware that a bay cruise is scenery and kayaking rather than a beach holiday

No. A bay trip is a boat, limestone islands, kayaking and a night on the water, on a schedule. If what you want after four days of riding is sand and no plans, look at Cat Ba, the Quan Lan islands or a flight south instead

September. The mountains are drying out and the rice is turning while the sea is still warm enough to swim in, and the crowds have left the coast without yet arriving in the mountains. Late May and June is the other good pairing

Yes, on the islands. Cat Ba has small beaches and is the most practical base, while Quan Lan, Minh Chau and Co To in Quang Ninh have genuine stretches of sand and very few foreign visitors. All of them are summer propositions

Not in October or November. The central coast has its wet season roughly from September into December, which is exactly when the northern mountains are at their best. From around November the far south is the better bet

Lan Ha, from a base on Cat Ba, if you are coming off the mountains. You get the same karst seascape with fewer boats, a beach on the island, and the option of a day boat rather than a scheduled overnight cruise

Three after a four or five day loop, and two as a minimum. One night is a transfer rather than a rest, and the point of this part of the trip is sleeping late twice

The northern and central coast has a typhoon season roughly from July into October, and the practical effect is disruption: ferries suspended, boats cancelled, flights delayed. Build a buffer, do the mountains first, and do not book a tight connection between an island ferry and an international flight

For this pairing, yes. It is the one place within reach of Hanoi that gives you the karst seascape, an actual beach and a national park, with enough on the island that a slow three days works without a schedule.

It will be tight and something will be rushed, usually the mountains. Two weeks is the length this pairing wants. With ten days, do the mountains properly and leave the coast for another trip

After, always. The coast is a decompression stop and it does not work as a warm up, because you will spend it impatient to get north. It also improves how you remember the mountains.

Not the north. From around November the far south comes into its dry season, so Mui Ne or Phu Quoc pair better with a winter mountain trip than anywhere on the northern or central coast
